Hi

I just wondered if someone could do an 1851 census look up please. I feel a bit cheeky asking but getting a birth certificate tomorrow and the more information I have the better.

George Webster born 1840 (Jan or Feb). Father Edward Webster a Tailor (from GW marriage cert). George born Ardsley (1881 census). I have found an 1861 census when George was 21 which I think could be a match but the mother is a widow so no fathers name listed. They were living in Holbeck, Leeds by 1871 so could have been in Leeds area in 1851.

Thanks, Victoria.

Ah that's interesting. I found that 1841 census on findmypast but it didn't give fathers occupation so I'd half dismissed it! On the 1861 census I'd found his mother was called Mary Ann and he was a stone mason - as we know he was when he married in 1866. So was his mother Ann or Mary Ann? And we had a record of an Edward Webster marrying an Ann Milner - so the John and James MILLER are interesting.

I really do need some more help with this please anyone.

I would advise waiting until you have the birth cert............you could end up following wrong lines otherwise..

So do I just ask for a George Webster born around 1840 in Ardsley father Edward? What if there were two because who is the Mary Ann on teh 1861 census?

AND what does England INMATE mean???????

I might wait a week before I go ahead with getting a cert to see if anyone can find any more info!

Thanks Ericthered.

Thankyou. Interesting!!!! So I'm wondering now if Edward his father possibly died around 1850 would they put the children in a workhouse - even though he was only 11? And then maybe when he got out of the workhouse he lived with his widowed mother who was now calling herself Mary Ann? The plot thickens!!!! I love it ;-)

Is there any record on Ann or Mary Ann Webster in the 1851 census?

You can't order a birth cert without first finding out if one was issued...............you need to check on freebmd, and find all the details

To order a cert you need to know the year, qtr, reg'n district and GRO refs.

If you find one which seems possible.............make sure to include the father's first name when you order it.

I went down to Leeds Registry office - you only need a year and fathers name there - obv the more information you give the better. They then check with you before you buy it. However, unfortunately they didn't have it! They think Ardsley could possibly be in Dewsbury area so we will phone them up to ask. I will also look on free bmd.

Can anyone find Ann or Mary Ann on the 1851 census or even Edward Websters death date?

Any more help on this could be good. What do I do if I can't find the certificate?

Can anyone else help on this one?

Have you tried looking on freebmd?

If the birth was registered, it will be on there.

Similarly, Edward's death..............

Ardsley is covered by Wakefield district.....................

Victoria

Victoria Report 29 Sep 2008 22:56

I have but there are a few George Websters born in 1840 in and around Leeds and as it doesn't give any more information it doesn't really help. Dewsbury didn't have the certificate. We are trying Wakefield tomorrow when their computers are working again!!!

Victoria Report 29 Sep 2008 22:58

The Ardsley near Barnsley is covered by Wakefield but the Ardsley near Leeds is covered by Leeds. I can't see why they would have been in Barnsley. And if it's East of West Ardsley it should be the one near Leeds.

Hopefully Wakefield will be able to help but where do I go from there if they don't have it?
