hi all
i need some advice, im looking for birth index for mary gilbert born coventry 1846, farthers name josiah [joseph] gilbert, mothers name caroline parker,
i can find a lot of marys born 1843 but no 1846,
i have found 2 entrys for 1846, but they do not state first name just sex of child
is there a reason why first name is not on register ?
the entrys are, jan 1846 coventry 16 423

so any help on this matter, would be gladly accepted,

Hi John
It could be that her birth wasn't registered. Registration didn't become compulsory until 1875. Between 1837 and 1875 it was up to the Registrar to find the births and get them registered if the parents didn't bother so obviously a great many were missed. From 1875 onwards it became the parent's responsibility to register each birth with fines incurred if they didn't and were caught.
Your Mary could be one of the children who were missed.
There is a submitted entry on the IGI for her but it gives no further details other than date of birth 1846.
In the census records she varies between 1844 and 1846 so if you want to continue searching then you probably need to spread your search a little wider but I couldn't find anything that you could think was definitely her.

About FamilySearch Pedigree Resource File
The Pedigree Resource File is a new lineage linked database of records available on compact disc containing family history records submitted by individuals through FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service. Family information is organized in family groups and pedigrees and includes submitted notes and sources. Many charts and reports can be printed from this data. Each disc contains about 1.1 million names. With the publication of every five discs, a master index for those discs will be published and packaged with that set of discs. With the publication of every 25 discs, a master index for those discs will also be published and packaged with that volume of discs. Discs may be purchased as sets or volumes.

I see they registered the other children.

A child can be registered without a first name. Sometimes that is because - despite nearly 9 months + 6 weeks to register in - the family has not yet chosen a name.

If you run a search with Unnamed in the first name column for any census, you'll see plenty of babies 4 weeks and older without names.

Some families placed more importance on the baptism and not the civil registration.

You could try ordering this one:
