Mary Holmes was my father's aunty. I have her B.Cert. she was born in Bolton, 25 April 1864 her mothers maiden name was Alice Fletcher, her fathers name Robert Holmes. I also found her in the 1871 census she was then living with her parent s and a brother Thomas aged iyear. in Bootle Knowsley. Lancs. . After that I couldn't trace her and thought she might have died, but then she showed up in the 1911 census living in her brother George William Holmes's home.. It states she was married, but due to an alteration on the 1911 census form its difficult to make out her married name. It looks like PAXTON But the X is altered and It could be Payton, Paton, not sure. It also states she's been married for 6 years. I would love to try and find out more about her between from 1871 onwards, She may have been married twice ? If anyone can possible help me I would be more than grateful.

Regards
Jean Ziggy.

Hi, Thanks for your help I do have the info on the rest of her family, I'ts just I cannot fill the gap between 1871 and 1911 regarding where Mary Holmes was. There is no middle name on her birth. cert.. On the 1911 census whilst living in George Henry Holmes (her brother) address, it states she has been married for six years. ( she could have been married previously ?) she does not have any children, according to 1911 census.

Thanks again

Mary Report 16 Apr 2010 14:11

I don't think it would say on 1911 census if Mary had children or not,it is usually the head of the households children that is numbered.

Maryb.

It also says she is married and not widowed ,so where is her husband.

I have tried every way i could think of to find her marriage but no luck at all.

If the death cert that Mary B. found is the correct one, then it should tell you who her husband was. That would help to find the marriage.

Jean

Jean Report 18 Apr 2010 14:47

Yes I think that deathcert. is the correct one. Because I know most of the family lived in Gt. Crosby and quite alot our buried in in St. Lukes Cemetry. So I am going to send for that cert and fingers crossed maybe it will open up a few more names for my tree.

This site is fantastic for all the help that is offered.

Thanks to all of you,

have Mary's death cert. She died the widow of Thomas PAXTON in 1938. Present at her death was stepdaughter Sarah Ann Ratcliffe ( who was thomas's daughter)

I know the 1901 census show Thomas Paxton living with his previous wife and children. So he couldn't be married to Mary then.

In the 1911 census Mary is at her brothers house her name is Mary Paxton. married 6 years. SO somewhere between 1901 and 1911 they must have married but I cannot find the marriage anywhere.

Of course Mar's birth surname was HOLMES but she could have been married several times and her name would have changed, she was born in 1863.

Can anybody help find this marriage.

Any help would be much appreciated

Cheers

Jean Report 7 May 2010 22:28

Well I am more confused than ever. I have found that the Mary Agnes Holmes who married a George William Whiting 8b 667 in 1886. and a Mary Agnes Whiting married a Thomas Paxton 8b 667 in 1916. Is this a coincidence. or what. all other census and her birth certificate have her as MARY HOLMES no Agnes on anything..

And then I cannot find her as Mary Whiting on any census.ie. 1891 or 1901

This is driving me insane.

Hi Ziggy

No way of telling if Mary Agnes Holmes/Whiting is your lady unless you want to buy the certs...

As for " Agnes " , names seemed to come and go in those day's ( or they did in my family, I have some that were baptised a completley different name to the one they were registered with )

Of course, the info I put above may have absolutely no connection to your lot but it was all I could find that might fit.....only the certs would confirm this...

I cant find Mary and George William on census either, or death for Geroge!!
