I am looking for ancestors :- Rankin on the 1891 census in Cheadle, Stockport, Cheshire.
On the 1881 census they are:-
Alexander Rankin HEAD 32 born Manchester Joiner
Ellen Rankin Wife 31 born Edinburgh? (I doubt)
Mary Jane Rankin Daug 10 b Liverpool (but married in 1890)
Ellen A Rankin Daug 6 born Stockport
Caroline WRankin Daug 4 " "

Nothing is coming up for any of them on this GR site in 1891
I am particularly interested in where Ellen / Eleanor is born in Scotland...
I would really appreciate a bit of help.. Thankyou

Madmeg Report 25 Sep 2009 01:38

I've never accessed a census through GR, but on Ancestry Ellen is stated as born Midlothian, and there is also Alexander aged 1 in 1881.

In 1891 can only find Mary Jane 20 married to Edwin Griffin 22, with sister Ellen A Rankin 16, in Cheadle.

There is a member tree on Ancestry who has Ellen's maiden name as McLhan, there is a marriage in March 1870 Manchester of Ellen LcLhan and Alexander Rankin. The Ancestry tree has his parents as William and Jane Rankin both born Ireland.

In 1861, Alexander is with parents William and Jane and some siblings - I assume you have those. Also in 1851. Both in Cheetham, Manchester.

Birth of Alexander Sep 1848 Manchester.

Hope that's of help, but like you I can't find the family in 1891 or later, nor any deaths.

these are all from www.freebmd.org.uk ...... a free site that carries the bmds from the start of registration on July 1 1837 to (currently ) about 1935 ..... volunteers are working ahrd to get all bmds up to 1983 onto this site.

Marriages Mar 1870 (>99%)

McLhan Eleanor Manchester 8d 199
McLhan Ellen Manchester 8d 199
RANKIN Alexander Manchester 8d 199

The transcriber obviously wasn't sure about the spelling of Ellen's first name!!

EDIT:- I looked at the actual image ......... the surname is McLean

BUT there is both an Eleanor and an Ellen entered, so it is uncertain who Eleanor McLean married.

the International Genealogicla Index on www.familysearch.org ... the Mormon site ... has this record. It is an extracted record which means it has been taken from the actual parish register.

But it says he married Eleanor

However, Ellen and Eleanor have been quite interchangeable at various times'

Thankyou, Thankyou and Thankyou very much to Madmeg, Ann of Green Gables and Sylvia (in Canada) for looking up my Rankin's.
Some of it is a really, really useful and very much appreciated, cross reference for me to confirm what I thought I knew, so brill and there is quite a lot of new info there too so great..and Ta again..!
Now, I haven't used this facility on here before, but have read posts a lot.
I have been too afraid to use it in case I do it wrong.
I have seen people keep getting quite badly told off for doing so and starting new threads.!
I have just read the rules but it doesn't really tell me how to reply individually, so I have had to do a blanket reply to all 3 of you.
I have seen people say "Do not click on my name" so am a bit worried and shall cry if I've done this wrong and get a nasty telling off by 'that person' ! lol!
So.. I am very sorry if this does not work the way I intend and I have really tried to do it correctly and clicked on repl in my threads..
Sylvia.. Ellen Adelia Rankin, my Dad's Gt. Aunt emigrated to Ontario in Canada, she married Joseph Pugh and they had the Post Office there..

Awww! - No need to cry Meryl, you have done everything 'perfectly'.

It's best to keep everything on the thread, including thanks so that everyone can see it. - Those people who have helped you so far will check the thread and see your message.

For info, these are the Rankin children born in Cheshire - I think there is an extra one which you may not have?

Rankin children - mothers maiden name McClean:
(from Cheshire Bmd site):

Cheshire Birth indexes for the years: 1872
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference

If you have any more questions re this family - Remember to add them to this thread and not start a new one - this way all the info which has been found already will be together and new 'helpers' will not be duplicating the effort.

Very nice to see someone taking heed of the suggestion to read the rules. It does make things much easier for all, but, don't be afraid of asking for more help - the 'odd mistake' if you get things a little wrong will always be forgiven.

Welcome to the boards,

Dea x

There is a death for an Ellen Rankin in 1897 which could be 'your Eleanor?

Cheshire Death indexes for the years: 1897
Surname Forename(s) Age Sub-District Registers At Reference
>>RANKIN Ellen 48 Heaton Norris Stockport HEA/58/70 ???
>>RANKIN Ellen 48 Stockport First Stockport ST1/107/100 ???
RANKIN Mary 21 Heaton Norris Stockport HEA/58/20

It looks possible that this has been entered twice? - anyway they are both born c 1849 which would fit!

Dear Helpers…..

The story so far…
Well…
Ellen McLean, was born somewhere? in Scotland in 1849. I have joined Scotlands People, but still cannot find anything that matches her with her Father, after endless searching 
There was always a saying in the family that in the 2nd W.War, one of my Dad’s cousins got in to The Scotch Guards, because his Gt.Grandma was a McLean!
My Dad’s gone now, bless him, but he told me about her and how she came down from Scotland to Manchester and went in service there..
On the marriage cert to Alexander Rankin in Manchester Cathedral on 24th Jan 1870, she is Eleanor, but has signed it Ellen. Her Father is Peter McLean and Alexander’s is William Rankin. (Mother Jane both b. Ireland)
I have found them in Liverpool on the 1871 census, with their first daughter, my Dad’s ‘beloved Grandma’, Mary Jane Rankin, age 1 month.
On the 1881 census the family are in Cheadle
Eliza Ann and the youngest 2 children on here however, appear to die later on,.. Eliza Jane at 10yrs in 1888 and Alexander at 2 yrs in 1882
On the 1891 census the daughters, as we now know, thanks to your help, are scattered.. with no sign anywhere of their parents, Alexander or Ellen.!
Ellen Jnr is living with her sister, my Dad’s Grandma and Grandad, Mary Jane and Edwin. Caroline is living with her Dad’s sister and husband, The Walker’s in Manchester.
But…although so young, they are of working age..
I am now wondering if their Mother Ellen got very ill in some way or left them, but why no Father?
Ellen Rankin (nee McLean) died in 1897, age 48 years old aww.. then..!.
I think?.. husband Alexander, turns up again on the 1901 census, age 57yrs re-married, in 1898, to a much younger woman, (as in about 18 to 23yrs younger) a widow, with 3 children, still in Cheadle… Annie Hough (nee Crank) age 34yrs and now, with a son of their own, also another ‘Alexander’ b. 1900, age 11 months..
I have also, now obtained a copy of the 1911 census:-
Alexander age 67yrs Head
Alexander Jnr age 10yrs Son
Annie age 44yrs Wife
Margaret age 19yrs Stepdaughter

Another child, born alive, but died and length of marriage 12 years.

The ages on the 2 most recent census’ do not tally with the earlier ones though..
My Uncle Fred, (1924) however, remembers the name Hough and Alex Rankin (Jnr) and associates them with the Cheadle area… so? I think it is the same Alexander Rankin, my Gt.Gt.Grandad, who didn’t die until 1923, aged 75 yrs old.
Why though, would he make himself out to be older on the census? I would have thought it would be the other way round, being married to a much younger woman, wouldn’t you?
I think she was born in 1866 which would only actually make her 18 yrs younger than him anyway? So..?
I have emailed Stockport Library to see if they have Workhouse Record between 1881 and 1897 to see if I can find Ellen in there…
I am so curious to know where they ‘disappeared’ to in 1891
And… my nephew has moved to and is building a house in Lochaline in Scotland, not far away from Dewart Castle where the McLean clan came from (unknown to him of course) so I am eager to find out where Ellen came from and trace back.. probably part of the Highland Clearances eh??
Goodness me.. this is an epic..! ooops sorry..!
What are your thoughts on this.. do you think it is Alexander turned up again?

No rush at all… just at your leisure.. you all seem very good at this..

HI Meryl

I've looked for another Alexander Rankin who is older than yours, but there only appears to be one in Liverpool. The only way to prove it is the same one is to get the second marriage certificate.

If you print off a form from Cheshirebmd and post to the Stockport registry office, and specify his father's name, if it is a different chap they will rip up you cheque or not put through your credit card details so you don't pay a thing.
