Find Ancestors

I am trying to find Mary Satchwill, born 1821 in Devon, who married my great great grandad. Thomas Winter. They married in 1859 but had already had two children. Alice was born in 1856 and Edith in 1859. In 1846 she had a daughter Elllen Francis Ley and in 1851 she was a widow. Also she had a son called William Vaughan Muirhead in 1853. He was born in Hercules Buildings in Lambeth. I am trying so hard to get her life in order of events and would love to find out more about Mr Ley and Willliam Muirhead (named as father on birth certificate of William Vaughan Muirhead). I hope someone can help.

Do you have the marriage certificate for her and Thomas Winter?

It should say what her marital status was, and if she was a widow, what her birth surname was.

It will also state her father's name. Hopefully. ;)

Googling -- William Blake lived at 13 Hercules Buildings 1791-1800.

Was Mary a bit of a Bohemian perhaps??

Blake lived in No. 13 Hercules Buildings, Lambeth for the most productive years of his life, from 1791 until 1800. It was in this house that he produced the Songs of Experience, Europe and America (among other prophetic books), and the series of twelve watercolours that includes Newton and Nebuchadnezzar.

The house, which was demolished in 1918, was one of the largest in a row of twenty-four, with a garden at front and back. It stood three storeys high and had eight or ten rooms. Blake worked in the front and back rooms on the first floor.

Lambeth was a pleasant rural area when Blake arrived, but with legislation driving some of the more obnoxious industries across the river, it quickly began to change into a noisome, disease-infested slum, the London described in Blake's eponymous poem.

I wonder where the Vaughan came from?

Well Mary & Thomas were still together in 1901. So the marriage weathered the storm.

Muirhead must've been an aberration.

Actually, not always a laughing matter. Our ancestors weren't as prim as our more recent ancestors might like to think. But women also didn't have any protection against exploitation and abuse. My gr-grmother had a child before marriage in 1890, and I'm doubtful that she really fell for the head of the household where she was employed as a servant (or his son, we don't know who they were, just the surname as my gr-aunt's middle name).

Interesting that Mary is described as "annuitant" in that census though. There could well have been an arrangement because of the birth, with the child's father being well off, which I assume Mary wasn't, from that address.
