Dorothy Report 27 Feb 2008 12:13

I am looking for marriage of Alfred King to Emily Doy.
I know they were both born in Norfolk and their first child born 1887 in Clapham London so have no idea what county they were married. I have been looking for a good year. Have birth certificate of child that states mother Emily King formely Doy so am sure they were married.unable to find anything on Doy only her death in 1948 in Guildford Surrey she was around 84yrs.
If i can find her marriage i may be able to go back further.
Regards Dorothy

The statement on the birth cert does not prove that they were married.........they could have lied.

Hi Alexandra.
After all this time i think you haved nailed it for me.
Iknow this is the correct one as i do recall being told her name was Carter to much of a coincidence.
Would they be able to produce a copy of birth cert with reg number and baptism date.
Thank you so much. Dorothy

Potty - Mitford district covered Gressenhall - so I dont think the Swaffam one is her.

And Dorothy a birth cert would not give a baptism date - but the baptism I found shows the date.

It may be that due to her illegitimacy her birth was not registered. I have several cases in my family where a child was born out of wedlock and not registered - even one who died aged 6 months - found the death but her birth was not registered as she was illegitimate.

These are all the births for an Emily in Mitford district between 1863 and 1864 - none for Doy or Carter.

Dorothy

I have answered that question already - the birth certificate would not have the baptism date - but the baptism I have found for you - has the baptism date.

I have put on here all the births for girls called Emily in the district that covers Gressenhall - which is Mitford between 1863 and 1864 and there are no entries for Doy or Carter - the one Potty found in Swaffam I dont think is right because it is not the right district.

It is entirely possible that her birth was never registered as she was illegitimate. Birth registration was not compulsory until 1875 so I would imagine that her birth was never registered.

I am currently looking at all the 1871 images for the village of Gressenhall and the Union Workhouse and so far cannot find William Carter and his wife Mary and their daughter Emily. It may be that there is a section missing as it goes from district 6 to district 8 - so it might explain why I cant find them then.

I would suggest that you order the marriage certificate of Mary Doy and William Carter to get further back with them.

It could be Soph - I did wonder about that.

Of course if Dorothy wants to she could contact the local registry office that covers Mitford and ask them to check the birth cert to see if it says she is the illegitimate daughter of Mary Doy/Dye from Gressenhall.

Dorothy - if you want to do this you should write to the Superintendant Registrar with a cheque for £7 to cover the certificate including a self addressed stamped envelope for them to send the cert to you with - and explain what you are looking for and ask them to only send the cert if it matches what you are after - if it doesn't they will just send your cheque back.

Dorothy - if you already have that birth cert for that Emily Dye then no need to ask them about that one obviously - but in case the birth registration was not passed onto the GRO you could ask them if they have it in their own records - but I wouldn't be too optimistic.

I think you will probably find that her birth was never registered at all.
