Erika H,
It was dreadful seeing the second family living with his first wife and daughter. Before John Perry died they lived in Laurel Lodge on the left hand side as you drive into Potterne from Devizes.
Many years later my great grandmother is living in Enfield near the Royal Small Arms Factory. My great grandmother had married John Biggs Bank’s of Potterne. He had lost his job in Newbury as an estate manager which is why they had to move.
In the census records of 1901 and 1911 Mary Sarah Sissons half sister is living with them. The half sister had taken on a position as a carrier of two young boys and ended up in San Francisco where her son was born. They lived on the Hertford Road.
What is so strange is that they were a close family but no one in our bit seemed to know about their bit !
My grandfather and his five brothers worked in the Royal Small Arms Factory yet knew nothing of their cousin who also worked there !
During WW1 the son. Arthur Francis Sampson born in San Francisco, went to the USA to fight and didn’t appear to be called up here. I think he may have had duel nationality. He goes on to marry and have children who would be my Dads cousins. They lived up the road but no connection or mention seems to have been made.
