Erika H, It was dreadful seeing the second family living with his first wife and daughter. Before John Perry died they lived in Laurel Lodge on the left hand side as you drive into Potterne from Devizes. Many years later my great grandmother is living in Enfield near the Royal Small Arms Factory. My great grandmother had married John Biggs Bank’s of Potterne. He had lost his job in Newbury as an estate manager which is why they had to move. In the census records of 1901 and 1911 Mary Sarah Sissons half sister is living with them. The half sister had taken on a position as a carrier of two young boys and ended up in San Francisco where her son was born. They lived on the Hertford Road. What is so strange is that they were a close family but no one in our bit seemed to know about their bit ! My grandfather and his five brothers worked in the Royal Small Arms Factory yet knew nothing of their cousin who also worked there ! During WW1 the son. Arthur Francis Sampson born in San Francisco, went to the USA to fight and didn’t appear to be called up here. I think he may have had duel nationality. He goes on to marry and have children who would be my Dads cousins. They lived up the road but no connection or mention seems to have been made.

Witnesses to the 1822 marriage were Richard Maslin, Jane Maslin and Richard Cooper

Erica, Don’t have this info. I knew Sarah ,my great grandmother’s aunt had married Richard Sissons in Rotherhithe . I know he died in Yorkshire and have a copy of his will leaving most to Sarah his wife but a trust and money to my great great grandmother’s Louisa Elizabeth Maslin who was about thirteen. I knew she’d married Richard Chandler but thought it was Devizes. I think she married again within a few weeks of her first husbands death !!! It was then they were living in Devizes I believe because Chandler is the name of the solicitor too. We’d assumed they were brothers but it might just be a coincidence. Richard Chandler didn’t last long and then Sarah goes on to marry William Grace as can be seen in the 1841 census when Louisa appears to be working in The Castle Hotel. It’s still there, rather a large establishment which made money due to being on the Bath to London route.

Hi Erica, Firstly many thanks for all your work. Its wonderful to know that you are helping others. I hope you get enjoyment from all your hard work ? I am the second generation to be involved in the research . My Dad and Aunt began around 1946. I became heavily involved about twenty years ago. The initial aim was to find why my great grandmother was named Mary Sarah Sissons Perry. It was the Sissons name being searched for. Sadly Dad and Auntie never received the answer for that but I found a will in Yorkshire which shows the recipient of some of the money as Louisa Elizabeth Maslin ,my great great grandmother. I knew at this point the history of her personal life, her husband leaving her in Devizes for a 16 year old girl in Soho ! I’d discovered Louisa’s sister named Sarah and she lived with a Jane Evett in London. I’m now pretty sure Jane is a sister of Aunt Sarah. However,Louisa gives her place of birth as Covent Garden and her father as George. I have a huge spread of a family tree but Louisa’sbirth and parents are a brick wall. That’s the bit I’m trying to track at the moment. I have also assumed due to the age gap between Louisa and her younger sister Sarah ,that there are possibly more siblings. Although Maslins is a Devizes name and Aunt Sarah goes to Devizes after the death of her first husband, somehow there are a number of Maslins in Rotherhithe where Sara was married to Richard Sissons. Trying to find that link is proving impossible at the moment. There are no definately dates ! Louisa appears to be born in 1821 but there is no real evidence for this it’s partly based on census records and partly on the 100 or so legal papers in the Chippenham Records Office. She may be older or younger. I don’t know. Thank you for all your help it is great fully appreciated.
