We need to order my husbands full birth cert.

On looking at the index, it says:

Vol 9c pg 1182.

BUT, in handwriting next to the entry it says:

Vol 9c pg 1182/a.

What does this mean and why would it be on there?

And which reference should I use to order?

thanks :)

Mary is this an English birth or NZ one. ?
If its English then it might be better to order his cert from the local reg office since you are not sure of the correct ref no fro GRO.What area was he born in?

Hi Margret,
It's an English one - Coventry, West Mids..

I've just looked up all his siblings too and all but one have some sort of handwritten note!

Maybe I should order it from the local reg office then.

Ta :)

Just a thought. They werent adopted were they?

looked at a Coventry bmd-certificate. Cheeky devils are charging 25 pounds for a standard delivery 60 pounds for one sent the next day.

You may have to use GRO but I suggest e mailing them first to have them explain the ref no.

Not as far as I know - but it did cross my mind, I must say!

I don't think so though. it's all a bit complicated!

My husbands Mum was married in the mid 1950's, had a child (in Sunderland) split with her husband, left that child with the husband and went to Coventry.

Then, (not sure what year) she met my hubbys Dad. They never married.

They had 7 kids starting 1958.

Then it gets messy as most of the kids were taken into care in the mid 70's. His Mum then left and went to Bristol and married again.

(We have social services looking for those records now, which is why we need the full cert)

So, no, I don't think they were adopted - unless of course, who hubby called 'Dad' wasn't and he adopted them all?

Who knows?!

I just looked on the Coventry city council pages and they say the reg office is charging 7 quid - so I hope that's right!

If there is anyone reading this thread who is adopted - did your birth index reference show something like this??

Or any other ideas why this would appear on a birth cert?

Thanks :)

Any crossing out and a new hand-written amendment means the original birth certificate was changed for some reason - could be adoption, change of name by deed poll or otherwise, the father named on the certificate could dispute the fact he was father - could be a number of reasons.

Order the certificate with the original details from the registrar in Coventry - Tel: 00 44 2476 833 41
Cheylesmore Manor House, Manor House Drive, Coventry CV1 2ND

Joan,
Thanks.

Hope this is not opening a can of worms that needs to stay shut.

Out of 7 kids only the eldest and youngest's certs have not been changed. The eldest died as a baby and the youngest, who was born 12 years later.

So I should order the one that is NOT hand written then?

And is it important to order from the Manor House and not the GRO, where I usually order from?

Thanks

Sorry, I'm being a pest :(

Can you tell me any of the other reasons birth certs may be amended?

Depending on some of the reasons, I may not order it.

We already have the short cert, we got that years ago. Just has his name, birth date and place.

His parents never married, but he was registered under his Dad's name.

Thanks very much

Dear Mary

I think if you order from Coventry with the original entry details you will still get the information you want. If you go via GRO it could well get complicated.
