Joan Report 14 Jul 2008 09:36

I am looking for the parents of Mary Brereton, who was born in Manchester in about 1842.
I know that she married George White from the Isle of Man in 1858,
and that their children, Charles, Mary, Eliza, Emma, George and Minnie were mostly born in St Helen's area, with the exception of Eliza and Emma, who were born in Somerset and Stafford respectively.

If anyone can tell me about Mary Brereton's parents, I would be most grateful
Thanks
Joan

There are a few options to choose from on this one Joan, the best way would be to get her marriage cert to get her fathers name.

To Lindylu

Thanks for that, Lindylu, for some unknown reason, I had not thought of that.
It's so long since I got a new name to research that I must have lost the habit!
Thank you again
Regards
Joan

You are looking for a mary Brereton who appears ONLY on the 1851 Census...becasue by 1861 she'll be there uinder her married name. This cuts the options down to only about TWO possibilities as far as i can see. She might be on the 1841 census as a small baby if the dates of her birth are as unreliable as they usually are!!
Hope this helps
Derek

Joan

Joan Report 15 Jul 2008 23:58

Thank you Derek
That is worth a look
As you say dates were not always reliable so I may have a chance.
I will look at 1841 when I go to the library.
Thanks again
Joan

Thanks Jenna

The Mary _iginer 1892 is the one I had decided on prior to my letter and that is why I had ruled out the 1841 census for help.I wonder what the half name really is. I see it is just about unreadable on the copy of the registration image.
I'll have to get the cerificate, I think,
Put it on the agenda!!
Thanks again

Thanks again Derek

You must have been right about the birthdate being inaccurate.
I am now determined to get to see the 1841 and also look at later censuses, to follow up the parents.
My keenness is because I want to know where, in Manchester they were living, Looks like I am in with a chance. Thanks again

Hi Joan.......if we accept Charles and Margaret as the parents of Mary Brereton, then I can tell you that in 1841 they were living in SUTTON COURT Manchester, and Charles aged 30 was a Labourer.
Unfortunately I cannot find this couple on any subsequent Census entries.
Neither can I find their marriage on the Lancashire BMD's....but they may have married before 1837, in which case its into Parish registers.........and the first Mary Brereton mentioned on Lancashire Births was born 1845!
I really think the only way to nail this is,and someone else said..is via the Marriage of Mary and George. If you go to lancashire BMD's, and scroll down to lancashire Births Marriages andDeath's..thats the free one! You can find the marriage (C5/3/336) and download the Application form and send it off. Will cost you £7.00
Good luck
Derek

Just a suggestion !

I have a few Brereton's attached to my family and they all seem to originate in Cheshire rather than Lancashire (It's only 'down the road, after all !'

Also, it was very common for people from both Lancashire and Cheshire to marry in Manchester Cathedral as it was cheaper! - If they married in a 'local' church, they would have to pay that Church and also the Cathedral fee!

You may wish to consider the Cheshire area?
