I started the Brereton link just above this and was curious, so I read these posts. My Brereton family were from Northwich, Cheshire, and John and Hannah lived in Angel Meadow (Nicholas Street) Manchester in 1841. John was a sawyer and died in 1847, the family descending to the depths of poverty including the workhouse in the 1850's. My ancestor John, son of the sawyer, did well and ran a hardware shop in Gravel Lane across the river. Charles Brereton just might be a relative. Did you get the marriage certificate, and if you did could you post the details? |

This looks like a possibility on 1841, though Charles is not yet a Police Officer? - I will follow him and see if he 'joins the Force' later: |

Hi Joan.......if we accept Charles and Margaret as the parents of Mary Brereton, then I can tell you that in 1841 they were living in SUTTON COURT Manchester, and Charles aged 30 was a Labourer. |

You are looking for a mary Brereton who appears ONLY on the 1851 Census...becasue by 1861 she'll be there uinder her married name. This cuts the options down to only about TWO possibilities as far as i can see. She might be on the 1841 census as a small baby if the dates of her birth are as unreliable as they usually are!! |
