I have a copy of my Great Grandfathers Birth Certificate and from that I got hold of a copy of his parents Marriage certificate. Now my problem is, it names my GGGrandfather as Thomas Molloy (deceased) bricklayer ( no mention of his Mother, as in the Scottish Marriage certificate). How do I go about finding out:
1: when and where he was born.
2: when he died. I know it was pre 1898 according to sons Marriage Cert.
3: when and who he married.
4: if there were any siblings.
It has taken me about 5 years to get this far just through searching the census and BMD indexes online. I am not in UK where I could just go and spend a day or 2 searching. I am very frustrated.
Any help at all would be very appreciated.
Thank you
Shona (down under)

You really need to find your gg grandfather on a census with his parents before you will know where and when Thomas was born.

What was your gg grandfather name and when / where did he marry? When was he born?

Are we confused with too many or too few Greats???

Not sure if we are looking for G Grandfather or GG Grandfather.

If you have the marriage cert for G Grandfathers parents(as you stated) there must be the name of his mother on it.

Can you give the name of the person who married in 1898 who he married and where.

Edward Molloy and Martha Annie Roberts They were married in a Registry Office is that why there is no mothers name on it. only Edward's and Martha's fathers and their occupations. Both are down as Deceased.
My father is Eric
grandfather, Ernest
ggrandfather, Edward
gggrandfather, Thomas.
I hope I haven't confused you as I seem to be getting confused as you say to many GGG'S

The marriage was at the registry office District Chorlton Counties Manchester and Lancaster in the Presence of James Bailey and Lizzie Dawson would these be the witnesses. is a registry office cert different to a Church Marriage cert?

Hi Shona,

On a marriage cert for England and Wales, only the father's name is mentioned on the cert. It makes no difference whether it is a church or registry office.

How old is Edward at his marriage in 1898?

With an approx age for him, we can then look in census records and hopefully find him with his father, Thomas and his mother and any siblings. Hopefully, we can then get back further and find Thomas with his parents possibly.

do you have a name for her father?

Shona

Shona Report 10 Aug 2008 16:54

Yes, Her father's name was Edward Roberts (deceased at the time of their Marriage) as was Esward's Father Thomas.
I Have addresses for them at the time of their marriage if that is any help.
Edward: 6 Hester Street, Greenk(h)eys
Martha: 5 Copinger Street
Greenk(h)eys I am assuming that is in the District of Chorlton where they were Married.
Thanks Shona
