Need some help please - I am trying to go backwards and am not sure I am on the right track.

This is what I have so far -

1. Maurice Charles Leonard Tapping born Nov 1928
(His parents - George Robert Tapping & Esther Colbourne)

2.I have George Robert Tapping's birth certificate -
Lambeth Oct 1895
(His parents - Robert William Tapping & Mary Jane Denford)

3. I have Robert William Tapping's birth certificate -
St George Hanover Square Oct 1867
(His parents - William Tapping & Emma Fox)

4. I have the marriage certificate of William Tapping to Emma Fox -
St Mary, Newington, Surrey - Jun 1865)

Both residing at Cole St., Newington

William's father - Caleb Tapping (Wainwright)
Emma's father - William Fox (House decorator)

Witnesses - Robert Fox & Mary Ann Fox (not yet sure where they fit into how they are related to Emma??)

Now this certificate has I must admit thrown me into confusion as I thought that William's parents were John Tapping & Fanny Sheperd(ley)!!!

Help me please to understand.

Thanks

Nicki

Hi Nikki
This info may be a total red herring.

The only William that I can find born c1831 in Hertfordshire was the son of Joseph & Mary Ann. I think that Joseph was the son of a Caleb. If you do a parent search on the IGI for children of Joseph & Mary Ann in Hertfordshire you will find 7 children baptised at St Andrew Hertford. Isaac and Caleb (twins) have the middle name Fox. Possible marriage for Joseph Tapping and Mary Ann Fox on 19th Apr 1829 at St Saviour Southwark.(IGI)
Hertford in the 1841 census on Ancestry appears to be missing but it is covered on findmypast but I don't have a sub to look at the details.Joseph/Mary and 6 children listed at Hertford.
Later census gives Mary Anns birthplace as Enfield Middx c 1806
Later census also shows some of the Hertford born Tappings living in Paddington/Newington.

It is the Newington Tappings that I am interested in.

So why would they have Caleb listed as William's father on the marriage certificate?

Hi Nikki
I must admit I had to do a search to find out that a wainwright was a wagon maker.Wagons need wheels possible link.
I can't explain why William would have given his father's name as Caleb if it was Joseph.
It might be worth following the other male Tappings through the census to see if they had any visitors, nieces, nephews living with them that may be connected to William and Emma.

Where is William? Are you able to establish where he is on the 1851 census?

Moggie Report 26 Oct 2008 12:29

In 1851 William age 20 is down as servant/groom at 2nd stable Warwick Place Mews in St Geo Hanover Sq.
This address came under the Belgravia district and the Belgravia district is missing from the 1861 census which is possibly why I can't find him.
