Am trying to find parents of sarah Ann Selena hughes born c 1865
She was a lady of welsh extraction who as far as we know returned to Newport where she was known as Selina Cotterill,having married William Cotterill in West bromwich in 1885
There is one sarah ann Selina Hughes on Freebmd of right age but can't be her as there is no Welsh connection
can anyone see her any where as I am totally stuck on this?

How do you know that she was born in Wales? Do you have a copy of her marriage certificate which will tell you her fathers name and occupation?

I think this is one of the cases where people put down where they were living as their birth place

No, I think this is one of those cases of family being wrong!! She was clearly born in Bilston and moved to Wales later in life.

perhaps its sarah's parents who were Welsh?

Not according to the census evidence. Even when she was living in Newport, she gives her place of birth as Bilston. She may well have ties to Newport but that doesn't mean she was born there.

If you get a copy of her marriage certificate it will tell you her fathers name and occupation and will make it easier to find her in earlier censuses which will help confirm her birthplace.

I can't find anything that references the name Selina either? This looks like Sarah A Hughes in 1881 and both Sarah and her parents were born in Bilston...

This gets stranger... this is the only Sarah Ann Selina Hughes I can find, born in neither Newport or Bilston...

Perhaps it was just a nickname?
i am working backwards from the Cotterills
Its the only marriage that fits

Ok, so the head was definately William Cotterill and they lived in Newport? Do you have the birth certificate of any of their children to confirm that Sarah/Selina was actually a Hughes?
