Find Ancestors

My husband's grandmother was Elizabeth (Eliza) Drakely b. 1879 in Wolverhampton, Stafford. d. 1959. Her father was Thomas Drakely b. 1845 Warwick, England (on 1881 census the name was spelt DREAKLEY) he married Ellen McIver Castle b. 1848 in Wolverhampton. They were married in Wolverhampton 1865. I have found this family in the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census. I have found who I think is Thomas' parents on 1861 census but no Thomas jnr. My problems and dilema are that I cannot find anything on Thomas (b 1845) prior to 1871 on any census nor can I find anything on Ellen (nee Castle) prior to 1871. I know that Thomas's father was also a Thomas Drakely b 1805 and his mother's name was Harriet Unknown b. 1813. If there is anyone out there that can shed any light and help me break through this wall I would be most appreciative.

Hi Vickii: Sorry I have caused you any confusion the information I just passed on to you was with respect to Thomas and Ellen Drakely the parents of Elizabeth (Eliza) Drakely my husband's grandmother. The Thomas and Harriett (you now mention) are the parents of Thomas but I have nothing further to go on for them other than the birthdates - Thomas 1805 and Harriett 1813

Oh dear - I seem to have caused quite a bit of confusion with this posting. I have never posted on this site before plus since I last visited properly (about a year ago) things have changed on it quite a lot. I am struggling quite a bit finding my way around on it and have not figured out yet how I can actually reply to each and every person that puts a response on the thread. This is quite different to some of the other posting lists I am on.

My thanks to you all, Victoria, Christine, Wayne/Tracey and Lynn for all your hardwork and responses. Unfortunately on my first posting I made a big mistake by taking information from some old notes of mine and not going directly to my Thomas' & Ellen's marriage cert. (which I have). Thomas' father was JOHN DRAKELY a labourer by trade. I did not have info on his mother as I am still waiting to receive Thomas' birth certificate. I have Ellen's b/cert. and confirm her father is Harry/Henry J. Castle a book binder by trade and her mother is Ellen Castle (nee Johnson). Thomas Drakeley and Ellen Castle were married 1865 Dec 10 in the Parish of St. George Wolverhampton. Tracey have not tried Pickards Pick Pages, in fact I have not heard of them before. I will try looking it up.

Thanks again everyone - I have some work to do on this line now - My husband has a very keen interest in finding out where Ellen's middle name of McIvor/McIver came from. We thought it might have been her mother's maiden name but obviously not.

With respect to the 1841 census - I don't quite follow this. Working dates back from Thomas' marriage year 1865 (Thomas was 21 then) his father John could have a birth date of 1814 give or take 5yrs either way. Is Ann Jefferay his wife yet to be and are the children Ann's from a previous marriage?


The 1841 doesn't state relationships, but I presume that John is with his wife to be Ann Jeffery. Ages stated on census are not reliable.

The marriage cert for John and Ann should give more help.

Have you found a birth reg for Thomas as I haven't found one as yet.
