Hi

Can anyone give me advice on how I can find a birth entry for my great grandmother, please?

All census records show that she was born in Southampton, although she didn't appear to live there until 1881. I have searched through the GRO entries on Ancestry.com (not the free bmd version) and she does not appear. Her father, John Luxton, came from Crediton, Devon and her mother Elizabeth unknown came from St Blazey, Cornwall. I also cannot trace their marriage, which would have been prior to son's birth in c1862. The family lived in Exeter and moved to Gloucester by 1871 when Mary Jane was two. She had a brother a few years older than her, named John. I have his birth date and the date he died, I acquired this through his National Archives Naval record, but I cannot find his birth or death in GRO index either! His birthplace is mentioned as Exeter on these records, where the family were living before they moved to Gloucester prior to 1871.

Last year I wrote to Practical Family History magazine for assistance, and they said that if the father was a sailor (he was at some point, but no record of him anywhere other than stating he was a sailor as his occupation, so I do not know which boat he was on) and therefore, the place the ship was docked would be the birthplace, and in this case it would have been Southampton.

I wrote to Southampton Records Office and they kindly searched for her birth, but unsuccessfully.

However, I had a slight breakthrough in 1911 census for Mary Jane (Channell) when it stated that she was a "subject".

So how do I find out where her birth was registered, please?

The simple answer is that you may not find one, as she may not have been registered. It wasn't compulsory until 1875.

If, however, she was born overseas........or at sea.....the birth may be on the separate register, which can be accessed on findmypast website

John is down as Lufton on the actual form and he is a Hawker which I suppose is why he travelled around a lot.

Their daughter is down as Mary J.

I would like to thank everyone for their quick response and the time taken to assist me with Mary Jane Luxton.

A few things I would like to add to save people doing unneccessary research...

I have all the census records regarding this family, both John Luxton and his estrange wife Elizabeth (seperated between 1871 -1881 census)
It is more Elizabeth's background that I am concerned with, as this would indicated Elizabeth's maiden name.

John Luxton, Mary Jane's father, was baptised in Crediton in 1829 ; parents John Luxton 1804 from Cheriton Fitzpaine, and wife Ann Rundle 1808 from Crediton.

Brother John Luxton born c1862, shows on Naval Records, born in Exeter (one of the census gives Elizabeth's birth as Exeter, when in fact, they had just come from Exeter - ("where do you come from? theory") His birthdate is given as 20 March 1862, which would fit nicely, and his death at sea was c29/5/1882 on board HMS Brontes (something else I cannot find enough info on). I can find neither birth nor death on GRO records)

I also wonder where they would have been baptised, if indeed they were.

As per the last remark, I would like to apologies if I have wasted anyone's time.

I thought I had asked for advice on how to find the birth entry for Mary Jane as she was recorded in 1911 listed as a "subject" and she is not registered on GRO. I did in fact say that "all census records show that she was born in Southampton" which I thought would indicate that I had searched through the census.

Thought I'd have another look. Found John Luxton on the 1861 census. Not sure whether you have him, but as you do not know when he married, I suspect you don't.

On this census he is said to be married and is a Sailor (although it looks like Tailor!).

He is in lodgings and no sign of an Elizabeth. Any thoughts, or have you got this one?

The marriage I put up of 1850 that John Luxton was a mason and he is on the 1851 census with his wife Eleanor living at her parents house and the fathers name is Greenslade. I put that up because there was an Elizabeth Harris on it. So I think we can dismiss this as a possible marriage for your John and Elizabeth from St Blazey...........................................................

The mistery continues.
