Not on Censuses - or Death Records!

Hi ...

Rapidly approaching my wit's end, so can anyone please help me locate this individual. Her birth registration is as follows:

Mary Ann LAVIN
1872 (Q4)
Coventry

I can't seem to locate her on any subsequent census, nor does there seem to be a death record for her.

A Mary Anne LAVIN married a John KELLEY in 1907 (registered in Coventry) and I initially assumed it was the same Mary Ann(e). However, as there seems to be no record of this Mary Ann after her birth in 1872, I'm now thinking it was a different person.

Any help would be most gratefully received!

Thank you.

Penny

I would suggest you buy her birth certificate to see who her parents were, then see if they can be found on a later census.

Many thanks for your rapid responses.

I'm trying to help a friend trace her grandfather - the John KELLEY already mentioned.

From various BMD certificates already acquired, we know that John KELLEY's first wife was Mary Ann LAVIN and that they had one child. He was then widowed in the second half of 1911 and remarried before the end of the year! The two children from his second marriage are my friend's father and aunt.

Mary Ann LAVIN is therefore only a step-grandmother, but I'm trying to confirm her place of birth so that I can locate her and her husband on the 1911 census. (My friend doesn't know her grandfather's place of birth and we need this to trace him back through the censuses.)

Hi Christina ...

Your post turned up while I was writing my first reply. This looks as if it could very well be Mary Ann - but I wonder if she was mistranscribed on all the censuses, as I couldn't seem to find her on the 1891 or 1901!

Many thanks for your help.

The names of the respective fathers will be on the marriage cert............as will the names of witnesses, whose identities may prove helpful..........

What was the age given for Mary on the cert? Same for John...........

What was the name of the child of the marriage?

Where did John re-marry?

Birth registration of John and Mary Ann's only child:

Mary A. KELLEY
1911 (Q3)
Coventry
(mmn LAVIN)

Death registration of Mary Ann:

Mary A. KELLEY
aged 38
1911 (Q3)
Coventry

(very possible that she died in childbirth or shortly after)

Details from John's second marriage certificate:

John KELLEY, aged 35 years, widower, gas works labourer
Living at 36 Stanley Road, Coventry
Father Thomas KELLEY (deceased), general labourer

(I don't hold the actual certificate, and therefore don't know names of witnesses at the moment.)

Does this help at all!?!?

Try looking for them in 1911....it's free to search, and you can search by occupation.........

Many, many thanks Jerseylily and Andy - you've been of enormous help! Knowing now that Mary Ann "exists" means that I'm more happy to conclude that she was the one who married John KELLEY in 1907.

Unfortunately, no sign of John as a "Gas Works Fitter" (or anything similar) on the 1911 census.

Must go and have some lunch - back later this afternoon!

Hi Christina ...

Absolutely wonderful, you've found him! I've been looking for this couple on and off for a couple of months (even had a friend lined up to do a search of the 1911 census when she next visited TNA!).

I haven't had a lot to do with the 1911 census (am already way back past that era on my own family tree), so did not know that you could search by occupation (thanks, Ricochet, for that tip).

I think that John may very well have been working at the Foleshill Gas Works in Coventry which were opened in 1909.

The reason why it was so important to find John on the 1911 census was to see what was given as his birthplace. There is a story in my friend's family that her grandfather changed his name to KELLEY (presumably sometime before his first marriage in 1907) as he was possibly some sort of army deserter who did not want to be found! Whether his father was actually a Thomas KELLEY remains to be seen.

Once again, thanks to Christina - and everyone else who answered on my thread.

The search for John continues ...

Hi SomersetGirl ...

Many thanks for the census transcription - does it give John's place of birth?

Penny

Penny Eves

Penny Eves Report 25 May 2009 20:52

My friend has the certificate relating to John's second marriage. His father is recorded as Thomas KELLEY (deceased), general labourer.

However, whether this is true or not (apropos the story of John's possible desertion and change of name, as mentioned in prervious posting) is anybody's guess!

Penny

PS I guess we'll have to buy the original census image in the hope that the omission of place of birth on the transcription is just an error.

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 25 May 2009 22:53

Might be worth buying his first marriage certificate. He may have had the same person as a witness for both.....could be a sibling?

Also, the address he married from in 1911 is not the one he was living at at the time of the census. Perhaps the family living there could be related in some way?
