Can anyone help, I have been looking for a David Evans born early 1800? I have his son John's birth certificate 1843 stating David and a Jane Jones as parents. I found a Jane Jones on the 1841 census with older siblings to John but the Head of Household states a Thomas Evans, but when I looked at each individual child it did not say that they were his children only a ? appeared. The funny thing that I have just noticed is that on Johns Marriage Certificate the witnesses are a Thomas Watts and Jane Jones. I am very confused, any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Sorry, John was a fellmonger living at Collitch Place His father David Evans was a furrier. Sophia was living at Newington Butts, her father William Povey was a Blacksmith. There ages I cant read properly but I think about 22 they were both born in 1843 |

I am having diffculty in finding ANY of them -if you have Johns birth cert where was he born? Have you found him and Sophia after their marriage on any census? Where was she born? There seem to be two Sophia Poveys born about 1844 -one in Abingdon Berks and one in Prestbury Cheshire |

Hello Gilian thanks for your reply, I have found John and Sophia on the 1871 census. I can't find much about his father David I am not sure whether he was married to Jane Jones although they are both listed as parents on Johns birth certificate. On the 1841 Census it states Thomas Evans as head but not as the husband to Jane or father to the children, John was not born at this time. So I am assuming that David must have died? I did find John and Sophia on the 1881 census, Thanks for your help |

Sorry Sophia was born in Abingdon, Berkshire. The other thing is that on Johns marriage cert, the witnesses are a Thomas Watts and Jane Jones? Also John was born St. Mary Magdalene Bermondsey, the address shown is 14 Victoria Place |

Hello Gillian, thanks a lot for that. Can I just ask one more question, I did find a marriage for David and Jane for the 23 July 1833 Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey. Obviously I am not sure if these are my relatives, but how does someone go about getting a certificate? I happened to find it on the Familysearch site, not sure where I find the volume or page no. Also how would I find David(thomas) and Janes births? Thanks Janet |

Hello Gillian you mentioned "where is John in 1851" well not sure if it is correct but I found him in 1851 staying at his grandparents in Southwark, so if this is correct that means I have found David/Thomas's parents and siblings? Janet |

If you mean the Southwark St George Household headed by John Evans 64 and wife Ann 57 -I too found that showing a grandson John 8 but I ruled him out as it says he was born St Georges Southwark, not Bermondsey. However I see that John is shown as born Southwark in 1861 when he is with his stepfather Thomas Watts so it could well be that this is the right family -somehow I had been expecting them to originate from Wales not Middlesex or Lambeth as John and Ann are, but maybe not. I will see if I can find them 1841 |
