Mark Report 16 Aug 2009 21:22

hi Lorraine
i have two family mysteries i would love some help with

firstly my great gran edith anne shaw who it seems travelled back and forth to both america and canada, although of humble means ?
she was born c. 1877 in huddersfield yorks.
she was not married but had a son eric my grandpa born huddersfield c. 1909
as yet i cannot find any records of them
it seems eric was raised by a series of grandparents/ aunts etc. and used the middle name hodgson, i wonder if this had any significance?
there is a story that my gretat grandma may have been travelling with her lover on one of her voyages, is it possible to trace travelling companions onboard ship?
the only other info on edith is that she had a withered leg due to infant polio, and she lived out her days in huddersfield until she was well over a hundred yrs. old

secondly, my grandma had a brother albert green b.circa. 1893 in barnsley yorks. he was the eldest of 13 children of a family of coal miners
his parents were james and louisa green , louisa being born 1873,so i assume albert was born about 1894?
my grandma always wondered what became of him after he set sail for canada and was never heard of again!
she tried the red cross etc but to no avail, but that was before genes reunited and you!
i would be very grateful for any help/guidance with these stories of my ancestors and i thank you for helping us to go on further, and making family research even more exciting!

Lorraine,
Thanks for your look-up before about the Lloyd´s, since then trying to find the Sidney b1897 has been confusing,but have received this info;
"Found out from Harold Brooker, my mother's cousin ( Millie's son) that my grandfather or step=grandfather, I guess, Sidney John Lloyd, apparently came to Canada as a Salvation Army child to work on farms here in Canada. Apparently his father had already immigrated to Canada. According to Harold, he arrived in Winnipeg looking for his father. He was only 9 or 10 at the time."
So if he was 9/10 at the time there may be a chance that he would appear on the 1911 Canadian Census, could l ask if you could do me a look-up for Sidney and for Millie Brooker(Breaker)b1899 and husband William who travelled over to Canada after 1917 as this is when they married in Eastbourne,Sussex. Millie´s maiden name was Tucknott,Please
Regards
David Tucknott

Hi Lorraine
Whawow, ships logs are so exciting!
How can i access them myself? because;-
I was told by Eric Shaw that his father may have died onboard ship and i would love to trace anybody by the name of Harry Hodgson Shaw who may have been travelling on a ship back from Canada with Edith Anne Shaw and may have died on the way back,
Would a ship carry a body all the way home or to the nearest port?
By the way Harry Hodgson Shaw is the name listed on Eric Shaw`s marriage cert. as his father, occupation photographer
He has always been a great mystery for the family, why would he have the same surname as Edith Anne Shaw?, as we were always told she never married, and Eric Shaw never knew him

Thank you so much for all your efforts so far and for the inspiration you give us beginners

Hi. Could you look up the census for America and Canada for a Walter Thomas born about 1854 in Norfolk. England. I cannot find him in any english census until 1911. Someone suggested he may have emigrated to America or Canada. He was my Grandad. All I have is his marriage cert in 1906. He was 52 and my grandmother was 27. He was a widower. His occupation was a Legal Writer on his marriage. He may have lived in USA or Canada from being a child. His father was Jonas Thomas and was a builder. Thank you for your help

Hello Lorraine,
This is a probably a question too far as I have so little info on this chappie.but here goes...

CHARLES REDDING arrived USA CASTLE GARDEN in 1872. aged 23, Labourer. Born c 1847 HASELOR WARWICKSHIRE.

Sadly that is ALL I know once he arrived in the USA
Hope it is enough to possibly trace him.

Many thanks,
Margaret.

Hi Lorraine. Thank you for your help. It is really strange that you have found one with the surname King. Everything else fits like you said. I wonder if he changed his name at some point and for what reason. I thought he would have to be somewhere. there isn't even a birth registration for him. It is like he never existed. I will follow this info up that you have given me.
Thank you again

I am assuming that Charles did stay in the USA as he certainly does not appear on any later census's in England. Once again thanks for your help, it is much appreciated.

Lorraine,
Please can you help;
Do you have access to USA Census Records?
I am trying to confirm that in the 1900 or/and 1910 Census there was a Joseph William J Tucknott b1880 in London, with a wife Mary C nee Dorn b 1882.
Rumours say that he travelled over in 1888, his first child was Mabel b1905 in USA, second child Alice Violet b1909 North Dakota, and 3rd James Allen b1911 in Chicago,Illinois,USA.

there is a tree on ancestry which seems to have gone down the same route as you with the story of joseph going to usa

the have a joseph tucknott born c 1880 london living with parents in london in 1881

parents names are thomas and nancy

but they are using the 1900 census which is shown above saying it is the same joseph even though the parents names on the 1900 census are william and jane, seems to be some confusion there.

Are your josephs parents called nancy and thomas or william and jane?
