Aunt Ann said her mother was born Alice Hawksley,(not sure if I've spelt it correctly), and her fathers name (Anns Grandfather) was called William Hawksley . The story goes that Alice Hawksleys mother died quite young,(about 45) soon after giving birth to her last child. William re-married & Alice didn't get on with her new step mum so she left home. William also had a daughter who married a vicar & lived in the N.E of England. Before Alices Mum died two of her children died quite young-a boy & a girl. |

But none of it explains where your aunt got the name Hawksley from when her birth shows a mothers maiden name of Clayton, although that is pretty much not going to be the correct maiden name. |

Found a marriage of a William Hawksley & Alice L Houghton. Belper Dec 1866. 7b/858. Sometimes called daughters by same name?- Looking back on births about 20-30 years previously I find 2 William Hawksleys. One born June 1839 Belper 19/419 and another also in Belper Sept 1844. 19/413 Trying to find when Alice was born & died to see if anyhting ties in. |

Forget about my Hawksley search-I must be a bit thick!!! Didn't realise that 'Bramley' & Basford were the registration districts! |

I don't think my Aunt has really thought it through. She just accepted that Clayton was on her birth certificate because this had been her mothers previous name. Ther's been no consistency at all. |

Why would Annie tell you that her mother was Hawksley when she has her mothers maiden name of Clayton on her own birth cert? |

I wonder if in the name 'Clayton Robert W ' if the 'W' stands for Ward? or it may be Wilson same as Uncle Charlie? |

I think that to have any chance of solving this you will need some of those certificates. |

My Uncle Charlie has always been known as Charles Clayton & my Aunt was called Anne Clipson. Wonder if there's another marriage to a Mr Ward somewhere. If there is my Grandmother was a very busy lady! |
