it's easy for anyone to change their name, whether or not they emigrated or stayed in the UK.

This probbaly is not what you wanted to hear!

But you can just change your name ............ and as long as it is not for unlawful purposes, it is quite legal.

It can be done by a legal deed, it can be done by publishing a notice int he local paper saying something like "from this date Joe Blow will be known as Joe Smith", or a person can just do it ..... especially if he/she moves to a new part of the country.

Not sure why you 'nudged'...........

This, presumably, is his birth

Births Sep 1905 (>99%)

STONELL Arthur Thomas Uckfield 2b 114

There is NO death record in England/Wales for the name - but he could have changed his name

Well, blondedays, you could ask someone to do a passenger lookup for you, but if you could please answer the previous posts re names etc., it would really help the helpers to do a bit more searching on your behalf.

Ann Report 16 Dec 2009 22:22

I have this problem too. I did find a person with the same unusual name around the right age in the USA, and on ships to South Africa but no way to prove if it was him.

When you say that he 'disappeared', do you mean he abandoned his family?

Who was his wife?

What were the names of the children?
