Thank you everyone for all this info. It will take me a while to go through it all !!

The wintnesses on the marriage cert are James Fuller and Emma Coleman. I have searched the census, etc but with no luck on any link. George's occupation is listed as Brewer but there is no occupation given for George Tubb which makes me think he was either deceased or Ann did not know. As both bride & groom signed their names with a cross there is a possibility that her name was misspelled.

I think George's father may be another George from Headley in Hants - just need to find confirmation.

There are a few Ann Tubb(s) listed in Family Search and I am following them all up on the census (a long and tedious job).

Thank you all again for all your suggestions.

I think we can give the boot to that ridiculous tree.

1861
Name: Mary Ann Cribs Tubb
Birth: abt 1833 - Brentford, Middlesex, England
Residence: 1861 - St Marylebone, Middlesex, England

1881
Name: Mary Ann Tubb
Birth: abt 1832 - Brentford, Middlesex, England
Residence: 1881 - St Pancras, London, England
- assistant in ladies shoe warehouse Soho Bazarre, unmarried

1891
Name: Mary A Tubb
Birth: abt 1832 - Brentford, Middlesex, England
Residence: 1891 - London, Islington, London, England

I don't see her in 71.

Unless Ann left George and went back to her name, and her name was really Mary Ann ...

Worth investigating Netty, but some people should just have their trees chopped down and turned into firewood, and be burnt at the stake on them!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jan 2010 22:24

Well this is the George Etherington identifed in that tree

GEORGE ETHERINGTON
Christening: 27 MAY 1832 Headley, Hampshire, England
Father: GEORGE ETHERINGTON
Mother: HANNAH
Batch No.: C132702

Father's name matches, but there would have to be some other reason to adopt him!

This is that one in 1851

Name: George Etherington
Age: 18
Estimated birth year: abt 1833
Relation: Servant
Gender: Male
Where born: Headley, Hampshire, England

Civil parish: Selborne
County/Island: Hampshire

and true, I'm not seeing him after that.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jan 2010 22:21

Well hm, that kind of looks like someone has adopted random Ann Tubbs from the censuses. ;)

But one interesting thing. I mentioned the one Tubb birth in Isleworth, and I'd been having a think on the father.

1871

Name: Ada S Tubb
Age: 8
Estimated birth year: abt 1863
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Charles
Mother's Name: Sarah S
Gender: Female
Where born: Isleworth, Middlesex, England

Name: Charles Tubb
Age: 35
Estimated birth year: abt 1836
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Sarah S
Gender: Male
Where born: Dunmow, Hampshire, England
- obviously it can't be Dunmow but I don't know what it is. Anybody?

Civil parish: Lambeth

mother's from Wiltshire.

Oh okay, here he is in 1841

Name: Charles Tubb
Age: 5
Estimated birth year: abt 1836
Gender: Male
Where born: Hampshire, England

Civil parish: Dummer
County/Island: Hampshire

with no sister Ann. I'd just wondered whether there might be a common Hampshire wellspring ...

IGI batch C042261 for Isleworth

24 Etherington births about 1813-1851, seeming rather complete, no George.

No Tubb births.

I kind of think that neither of them was actually born in Isleworth - birthplace of convenience on the census like.

IGI batch M042261 for Isleworth

5 Etherington marriages, 1831-1855.

One TubbS marriage, 1814.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Jan 2010 01:22

So they marry in 1858 and in 1861 they have

Charles Etherington 8 - born Isleworth
Louisa Etherington 7 - born Isleworth

Whose kids were they? They weren't born in Isleworth under those names, or registered under those names, anyhow.

The pre-1861 situation is similar for George as Viv said. Another elderly soul, Sarah Etherington 1751 in Isleworth in 1841, no more. Aha, in 1851 there is a small scad though. Since the kids in the household of Charles (born Isleworth c 1820) and Elizabeth were born in Isleworth, he ought to be there in 1841. Ditto couple William and Sophia, born 1005/1801.

Well, William and Sophia are in Ealing in 1841, no son George. Charles's wife Elizabeth is from Reigate, and that's where he is in 1841, single. Getting nowhere.

We have two possible matched pairs of Charles and Sarah births

Births Sep 1852
Hunt Charles Brentford 3a 59
Births Jun 1854
HUNT Louisa Mary Brentford 3a 71
(born Q1 reg Q2?)

Births Mar 1853
Day Charles Brentford 3a 67
Births Dec 1854
Day Louisa Brentford 3a 55
(not a great match for 7 in 1861)

Births Dec 1852
Eden Charles Brentford 3a 63
Births Dec 1854
Eden Louisa Brentford 3a 55
(again not a great match)

Births Sep 1852
Mills Charles Herbert Brentford 3a 62
Births Dec 1854
Mills Louisa Elizabeth Brentford 3a 65
(and the third not great match)

and the best for last

4 possible Charles Smiths, one of whom is Charles George
Births Mar 1854
Smith Louisa Alice Brentford 3a 67

Of course, ours might not even have been born in Isleworth. Or George and Ann might have had one each ... but I think looking for those Charles-s and Louisas in 1861 might be an idea.

So Ann Tubb was born in Isleworth which is in Brentford district.

Interestingly, her 1858 marriage (there's a screwup, her husband doesn't show on the list) is the first ever Tubb event in Brentford. Hm. No parental deaths, no sibling births or marriages ...

The censuses have no Tubb-s born in or living in Islesworth, except a child born in 1862 whose father was from Hampshire and an old unmarried man named Jno Tubbs born c1787, in the workhouse in 1861.

Can you tell us who the witnesses to the marriage were? You never know, there may be a connection that might be findable.

Hello youindoors! Viv has challenged me to take a look at your search here and I would like to ... but allow me to say as I just said in another thread ...

Hello one, hello all! I just got a PM ( from someone about that other thread) saying I haven't been around much. Too right. I took on a new contract in the fall when I thought me and one of my existing contracts, my main source of work and money, had had a parting of the ways and I had to make up the difference, which I did when another offer happened along at almost exactly that moment, charmed life me ... then the other minor clients I had went nuts with work ... then the one I thought I'd been divorced by came back with a vengeance ... and I haven't slept or bathed in a week ... or more ... and I am waaaay behind on some horrible jobs, and new ones keep arriving ... and of course my eye is still &%$# and I am supposed to find time in all this to put in 8 drops a day at four different times ...

So once again I am going to stick this here so that if I don't get a chance later tonight I'll have it in 'My threads' to come back to and show Viv how it's done ... evilgrin
