Hi Bee,

Thanks so much for your additional information, which I have now added to my tree.

I had no idea my request would generate so much interest and so many offers of help!

Thanks also to Margaret Rose, who is now kindly looking into the Busby side of the family for me.

Oh my goodness, this is more info than I ever expected. Thank you Julie, for finding Frederick and Jane.

Also interesting in that household is George Busbey ... the Busb(e)ys were also related to the Holifields, so I must look into that one.

Joy, all the best with your search for your elusive Gt. Grandfather.

I must put this lot into my tree now!

Thanks again, Liz

Wicked..there are 2 marriages coming up for a Frederick with a Jane in the Qtr

but using the census i i have discounted one of them as the Jane married Mr Hadley in the Qtr

So this im 99.9% sure this is right

Not a problem now I have subscription and I've found most of my lot.

If only i could pin down my very elusive Great-Grandfather for definite in 1911, he's not where he should be that's for sure. I think I have him thanks to recent info from an Uncle......If he's the man I've found he's telling fibs.

Gosh, Joy, yes - it all fits together now.

I am overwhelmed that you have looked up the details on the 1911 census for me. That is above the call of duty, but most generous!

Thank you - it would have taken me hours to make that connection with the other Holifields.

How brilliant!

I am so pleased to see confirmation of the family story that they were bell-hangers. I just wanted to understand the connection.

They are a very well-known family for this craft, in fact they are still in Appleton to this day.

Wow!

Once again, thank you.

Julie, Thanks for census info. Which census were you looking at, please?

I haven't had time to look him up, but will do so. I have basic subs to Ancestry so can check him out on there myself.

Thank you again, both of you, for your help.

Found that one at Ancestry (1916-2055 transcribed).

Some years are districts are still to be transcribed at FreeBMD.

Joy, Thank you SO much.

Don't know why I couldn't find it.

Julie - I was just trying every possible date range and thought that 1890 was about the earliest they could have married.

1920 makes much more sense!

Many many thanks
Liz

I would so appreciate a fresh pair of eyes, as I'm going nuts trying to find this marriage record.

Info I have is:

Cuthbert G. White married a lady from Appleton, Berks, with the maiden name of HOLIFIELD. I guess this could have been as early as 1890.

They had a daughter Dorothy A. White, who married Joseph W. Mitty on 30 May 1942 in Appleton, Berks (Abingdon reg. district vol 2c p 971). Dorothy was aged 19 or 20.

I found Dorothy White's birth record: Dec Q 1922, Abingdon Vol 2c page 481. Mother's maiden name HOLIFIELD - which is what I expected to find.

The Holifields were based in and around Appleton, Cumnor, Fyfield, for generations, and I believe that Dorothy's mother was from this same family.

Dorothy's mother's first name is possibly Catherine or a variation of this; she was apparently known as Kit (according to a letter I have from a Great Aunt, written in the 1970s, however I am not accepting it as gospel as she has made mistakes with other names).

However, despite searching FreeBMD from 1890 to 1940 in 'All counties', I cannot find a record of a Holifield - White marriage for a Cuthbert White marrying a Holifield.

I guess they might not have been married, but they are 'Mr & Mrs Cuthbert G. White' on Dorothy's wedding invitation.

They lived at The Stores (the Post Office) in Appleton, Berks at the time of the wedding (1942).

Ultimately, I'm trying to find how the Whites and Holifields were related. Just to make matters more complicated, I have found a marriage record in FreeBMD of Sarah Elizabeth Holifield marrying William Alfred White in Mar Q 1893, Abingdon district.

I realise there are plenty of opportunities for mis-spellings and mis-transcriptions here, and that Ms. Holifield could have been married before she married Cuthbert (presumably in this case 'Holifield' would still be recorded as her maiden name as Dorothy's mother).

I hope this all makes sense, and will be most grateful for any suggestions.

Thank you,

Liz
