Find Ancestors

Yes Jerseylilly I have. Admittedly it was a number of years ago, but I actually checked the original registers at the local registry office. Not a hint of him, mis-spelt or otherwise. :-)
Some of his children were bapttised at St Simons Church in st helier. From memory I think at least 1 was spelt caderwell.

I see you found the 1891 reference, I'm pretty sure that must be him. He was known as Walter all his life. Wish he was on the 1881.

Thats his grandaughter from his eldest child Ladykira. She were born in Jersey, Thanks for pointing out the Lewisham connection. Probably just coincidence but you never know. Hmmmm. :-)

Thats his wife Julia on the 1901. He was at sea when that census was taken. On a ship called Victoria. I believe from Jersey to France. So far been unable to find crew records for the right one.

I called Lewisham history centre today. Looks like I could be in for a BIG job, as the chap says blackheath covered a vast area back in 1868.

Alison - have you had the chance to thoroughly check the St Helier birth indexes at the Jersey Archive? or are you absolutely sure that he lied on his marriage certificate and was not born in Jersey?

All that are on-line are the baptisms. As we have a pretty good idea of his year of birth it should be relatively simple to see if he is listed in the births. I would be inclined to check through by Christian names as the surname is so open to mistrancription.

Edit: just found him on the 1891 - Walter Caddwell - where he says he's from London

LadyKira, jerseylilly has most of his children named in her post. There were a few others that died in infancy, but those listed all survived to adulthood.

Kay he could have been born under a maiden name, but his father is listed on his marriage cert.

Thats why I got all excited about the WILKISON find last night, but alas wrong fathers name on the 1871. :-(

I think the possible way forward at the moment is to look for his baptism around blackheath london. Unfortunately I am not on mainland UK so can't look myself.

Carol, yes I have read that article. Left me with mixed emotions. He may not have been a soldier but he still ended up giving his life in a war. :-(

Martin was an unusual name at the time. Searching census leaving surname blank and Both London and Kent does not come up with anything definite. Not may hits at all

Yes they are all "mine" at the archives. Martins children as you say.
I'm fairly confident in saying all mention of the name on here, is from my research that I have passed on.

If you haven't already seen it there are lots of Kadrewells on-line at www.jerseyheritagetrust.jeron.je, unfortunately not your Martin, but several of his children are there.

I have looked up the marriage of this chap before - might even have been for you - and he does give his birthplace as St Helier on his marriage certificate, but as you say if he lied about it he could have been born anywhere.

Although he appears in 6 trees on this site no-one seems to know where he was born.

The only planters I can think of Gwyn would be tea, coffee indigo etc, Have you ever heard of any other versions?
That came from Martin marriage cert in 1892 by the way.

I was just looking for WIKISON on ancestry see if it shows up on census just as a hope. Is that definately how it was spelt as I don't seem to be able to find any reference to it. May I also enquire where you found it?

That surname spelling doesnt show up on IGI either,,,,,maybe he was born overseas,,,,,but that spelling isnt in GRO,or anything like it,,,,,,,,Alexander has Scottish ring to it,,?

Thats the million dollar question. Our family is the only family I have ever come across with that name, and only his offspring and down. He married in 1892 in Jersey and lied about his birth place then, but his Merchant Marine records have always said London. Family rumour says he was possibly from Ceylon, which could mean his name was KATHIRAVEL/KADIRAVEL anglicised a bit.
So you see my problem.
I got the blackheath from his medal card, which is the only thing which has ever mentioned an area other than just London.
I do know his father was called William and occupation was a planter.
