I was wondering whether anyone could please help me to find the marriage of my great aunt Joan EMERY. It doesn't show up on Freebmd unfortunately & I really don't know where to look further.

Joan was born 02/06/1911 at 6 Dudley Rd, Wolverhampton, the daughter of Hubert EMERY & his wife Fanny (whose maiden name was OVERTON). Joan, a Nurse, apparently married in August 1940. I've been told that her husband was Richard Leighton RHYDDERCH, born 1891 in Rhyl. Richard was wounded (possibly gassed) in the First World War (1914 - 1918) and wasn't fit for work on returning home. He had previously been working for a bank (Lloyds?) and he received a lifelong pension from them.

Joan & her husband lived at Hatfield Broad Oak, Hertfordshire & they had no children. His family was believed to have been titled & apparently his older brother and sister, who also lived in Hatfield Broad Oak, were Sir or Lord Rhydderch and Lady Rhydderch (although I have found no evidence of this).

I have found the following entry in the London Gazette, 4 September 1914:-
5th Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment; the undermentioned to be Second Lieutenant, dated 5th September 1914 - Trevor Richard Leighton Rhydderch (to be supernumerary).

This might be Joan's future husband?

Joan died in 1978.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance,
Tony

Crikey!! That's a lot of information already!!

Thank you to all who have replied. You've been a great help.

So it would appear that Joan's husband was previously married. I shall have to look into that & obtain Joan's marriage certificate now that I have the details.

After a bit of 'googling' I've discovered that Trevor's brother was indeed a 'Sir'.
William Edmund Hodges RHYDDERCH Esq., Secretary and Commissioner, Board of Customs and Excise, was made an Additional Member of the Civil Division of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath on 13th June 1946.

I also discoverd that their cousin Oliver Graham Sutton, son of Oliver Sutton (headmaster of Cwmcarn Elementary School) & Rachel Sutton (née Rhydderch) was a "distinguished applied mathematician & science administrator, notable particularly for his fundamental theoretical work on atmospheric diffusion and boundary layer turbulance and for his direction of the Meteorological Office from 1953 to 1965".

It's amazing what you can find on the world wide web!

Many thanks for those additions LadyKira.

I'd noticed that there was that military record but I haven't got any credits left to obtain a copy of the scan & £7 for one download is a bit too much as I don't need any more downloads at the moment :-(

I wonder what a "C of Hussars" is. I suppose a corps of hussars but I always thought that cavalry was organised into squadrons. Maybe Captain?

I was wondering whether the card had any details of his rank?

Thanks for posting his rank for me FannyByGaslight. I think that either this is a different TRL Rhydderch or that it is the same one & that he changed regiments.

The reason I conclude that is due to the information I posted yesterday:-
London Gazette, 4 September 1914:-
5th Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment; the undermentioned to be Second Lieutenant, dated 5th September 1914 - Trevor Richard Leighton Rhydderch (to be supernumerary).

That would mean that he was an officer from almost the start of the war (unless he was later demoted of course).
