Hi, I see you are related to the Dridge's in Emsworth Hampshire, if you are interested in that family I do have a lot of information which I would be only to please to share. My husbands grandfather although born a Dridge in Emsworth but was registered as Dredge on his marriage in London and it remains Dredge. Uncle Ted has confirmed everything I have found so I know its all correct. |

The clockmaker! My mother says yes - her father was supposed to join become a clockmaker too, but ran away to sea instead. West Tisted near Alresford, is a village not 10 miles away from where we live now - it's an extraordinary co-incidence. The village of Ropley, where Elizabeth was born is also close by. My mother had no idea that her grandfather came from here. We have a photograph of Mary Purdue: a demure young woman in a Victorian dress. |

Just for information, in the 1881 census Edmund and Mary Ann Stevens are living next door to the Purdues, with Jane Purdue, widowed, being kept by the children (Henry and Arthur). |

I don't know about Madmeg's "sad nerds": looking up records seems a perfectly rational occupation to me, and I am grateful. I'll try not to take unfair advantage of your good nature - but I only started on this a week ago! |
