Helen,

Thank you very much , I will take a look at the Mirchell website.
I have looked on the Mitchell website before and found quite a few old photos of streets where my ancestors lived , it's fascinating, even found the street where I used to go to nursery about 60 years ago now , Gawd giving me age away now.

best wishes

For interest:

Note James Downie has been employed working with horses one way or another through the different census.

It's looking like his workplace could have been ... the Tramway Stables in Tobago Street. Images can be seen on:

canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/187965/digital_images/glasgow+58+72+tobago+street+tramway+stables/

Catherine Street later changed name to .. Drake St, Calton
Waterloo Street later changed name to ... Forbes St, Calton

Old pictures of these streets can be found on:

Aileen, had a look at the birth cert for Andrew John b. 1876 in Calton, it is the right one with parents Ellen McCluskey and James Downie,
Cheers

Aileen ,
Yes I am pretty sure that is Andrew Johns birth, although I haven't viewed the certificate yet just the same as you have found, but Aileen please DO NOT use up your credits for me on S.P. I asked for the look ups hoping that someone with ancestry subs could have a look on the census's ,

All the information you and Ginny have found is excellent, I am most grateful.
Don't forget what I said about your credits,

best wishes

Aileen Report 3 Jul 2010 20:07

I assume this is him

1876 DOWNIE ANDREW JOHN M CALTON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK

Gee

Gee Report 3 Jul 2010 19:56

Yeah, I think you are right about (Andrew John) that Jean.

The trouble with Scottish censuses is that they wont allow access to the actual record itself

Which means you have to take what the transcription says....which we know is often wrong!

Up to you now hun to dredge through SP

Good luck

Aileen and Ginny,

thank you for all the census information,
I think the Andrew John on the 1901 is John on the 1891 census born in 1877,
What do you both think ?

Jean

Jean Report 3 Jul 2010 15:42

Ginny,

Thank you,
James and Ellen were married in Bridgeton, Glasgow in 1869, so I thought they might still be in the Glasgow area in 1871.
I found the marriage on igi with his name as JAS, would that be the James do you think ?
