Carole, regarding how to organise your threads.
For example, you might have a Fred Smith in your tree, and you need help finding him 1891. Personally I think it's a waste of time putting name in the heading (others might disagree!). I would put "1891 census lookup please".
When you have been given all the info about Fred, parents, siblings, shoe size etc you might want to see what became of his brother John. This belongs in the same thread and you can add the query to it.
It's pretty much the same people helping all the time so starting new thrads won't be of any use.
If you are coming back and think people might not look (seeing lots of responses) you can change your heading to something like "more census help please 4.8.10".
If it's at a bit of a tangent, and you feel it justifies a new thread, you can always point out that there is a related thread when you start.

Maybe. How about being on the payroll? How did you access the records? If I could do it I could check to see if any of the others named are on the criminal roll.

Maybe he had been a naughty boy and just put him in there for a while?

OK Jax. Thanks a lot. I will keep looking.

jax

jax Report 3 Aug 2010 13:07

I saw that but I could not find him on the criminal register surely even if he was awaiting trial he would be listed and there seems to be families in there...but I dont know what happened back then

Hi Jax
At the top of the 1841 census page the address shows Hull borough gaol. What makes you think it imight be a work house? The rest of the family are with their parents so there seems to be no reason why Geo. should be in a workhouse.

Carole Report 3 Aug 2010 12:56

Hi Brummiejan
I'm confused. If I am looking for example for Geo. Shakesby1825c and I am looking for William Shakesby 1847. Do I keep them all under Shakesby as a thread item and differenciate with the christan name or do I search them separately? That looks to me like searching for the same family but different people. Do I post them once each or does that count as searching the same family twice?

jax Report 3 Aug 2010 12:50

Dont think it was a prison

Carole, the best thing to do re. heading is to put the nature of request - e.g. census lookup, birth, or in this case prison records! Plus country if outside England/Wales.
Personally I would leave all your threads, they do no harm and one day might be found by a relative!

Hello Ann
I have posted the explanation this morning. Sorry I upset you. I think I understand better now how the system works. Thanks again for your help.

Carole

Carole Report 3 Aug 2010 12:14

Thank you Michael. Think I have been using the site incorrectly. Do I use the family name in the thread slot and then the personal details of the person being searched in the second/subject slot? I was trying not to get a duplication by removing Thomas before starting the request on George.

No need to post same family twice.
Just by adding a new request, your post will appear back at the top of the pile.

Carole

Carole Report 3 Aug 2010 11:49

Sorry Ann of Greengables and Jax. I removed it because I thought that I had finished with Thomas. I did say thank you to all who had helped and that I had added the info to my tree.
Also I see so many times about not posting the same family twice. I didn't want to cause any confusion.
Sorry I couldn't stay on line last night. I was descended upon by myriad visitors out of the blue.
