hi please can anybody help my hubbys grandad was george alexander cannell b 1885 west derby all i know is he had nerves of steel afraid of nowt i have bee told he was a drill sergent major in army.. i,d like to find more about this brave man
i believe he was in his 90s when he died but not to sure as i cant find his birth certificate FOUND OUT FROM GRANDSON GEORGE WAS A RSM REGIMETAL SERGANT MAJOR HED SEEN HIS MEDALS AND RIBBONS GRANDSONS DAD SOLD GEORGES MEDALS NO IDEA WAT REGIMENT HE WAS IN WE RECON INFANTRY

His enlistment was on 10/5/1917 he was discharged, 21/10/1918. It appears no medals were awarded and reason for discharge is under references I dont understand.

The man was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers for his brief period of WW1 service..........Sapper is the lowest rank in the Corps.

•A sapper or combat engineer is an individual soldier who performs a variety of combat engineering duties. Such tasks typically include bridge-building, laying or clearing minefields, demolitions, field defences, and building, road and airfield construction and repair.

If this is his family no wonder he joined the Army.

The 'Medal Card' looks to me like a 'Silver War Badge' Card.

There are 10 George's or George A's or George Alexander's with medal cards.
None of them were sergeants - all were lower ranks like private (or driver, sapper, gunner, bombardier)

mgnv maybe my hubby grandfather told we porkies to impress a young lad or maybe he did do a bit of acting sergent major

Perhaps he didn't have a medal card as he stayed on in they army in which case his records will still be with the MOD if after 1920.

Even if he'd stayed on in the Army there would still be a WW1 medal card for him.

His record indicates a service of only a few months..................

No medal entitlement then perhaps if he didn't serve for long enough or didn't serve abroad.

geoege was always tell people about the army also my hubby used to see george and his army mates in pub and thay would talk about army day
so he must of been in for more than few months

Why do you assume his medals were issued (or not) to George Alexander Cannell - might they not have been issued to George A Cannell, or even George Cannell - i.e., exactly the name he enlisted under?
