Find Ancestors

Looking for information on Thomas Sykes. He was born in Halifax in 1822. His parents were James Sykes and Mary(nee Cooper). I have been told by a relative, thatThomas married Mary Pollard in 1845. However,I found a record for that marriage on familysearch.org, and Thomas' father is down as Joseph Fallowes, (why would he have a different surname anyway?). Very confusing. I found ,in the 1881 census, a Thomas married to Mary Hannah from Halifax. he is 59 ,she is 57. The dates match up,but dont know if this is the same person. Can anybody help?

A different father's name on a marriage cert could mean the he was in fact a step-father.

Can you explain why you're looking for information on him?

Are you descended from a child of a Thomas Sykes? If so, do you have that child's birth/marriage certificate, and can you tell us what it says about Thomas?

It could be a complete wild goose chase to go researching this Thomas Sykes, if there's nothing to connect him to the person of interest to you.

I don't know where at familysearch that info is, but it sounds like something submitted by someone possibly unreliable.

Thomas had a daughter called Emily. She married James Binns,who is my grandmas Great Grandad.

Thats all i have. a relative has told me a mary,possibly thomas' wife was living with them in 1841. she must have meant Thomas.

What is this Marys maiden name Janey. Looks like the right Mary

At pilot.familysearch there are several baptisms of children of James Sykes and Susannah or Hannah, 1792-1812.

Elizabeth, John, Abigail, Joah (possibly Job?), Crispin.

I wonder whether Thomas was a child of one of the daughters, not married, and James Fallowes was either his real father or his mother's husband, his stepfather, as Michael suggested.

I'd still get the actual marriage certificate to see what it says, rather than rely on a record of unknown source. It's possible that the father's name was James Fallowes Sykes, even.

This certificate would tell you the mother's maiden name

If it's the marriage in 1845, then she's Mary Pollard.
