Glad you see what I mean Ken! To be honest, I think it looks a bit like Brilley on the image myself - there is a faint dot above where the "i" would be. In any case, the simplest explanation is usually the right one, and as she consistently puts Herefordshire as birthplace I think we should go with Kington really. Interesting 1851 find!

I think brummiejan is right and that the place is Brilley which is the registration subdistrict containing Kington. I agree that Bulley is written on the form but that was probably a mishearing on the enumerator's part.

This man in the 1851 census could even be her grandfather.

sometimes the question was misunderstood

If someone was asked "where are you from?" ................... they could answer it as "where were you born?" or "where have you moved from?" or "where did you last live?"

sooooo

is it possible that she had been living in Kington?

Kense Report 9 Nov 2010 18:48

On the 1841 census there are a few Worthingtons living in Kington, Herefordshire.

There is a place called Bullock Mill just outside Kington - perhaps that was known locally as "Bulley"

I think it is definitely Bulley as you can see the letters easily on census but i can't understand why she put down kington aswell. Could it be Kingston, is that nearer to bulley than kington?

Could it be Butley?

Hi everyone thanks for looking I am positive that James did marry an Ann Worthington as I have my gggreat grandads birth certificate on there it states that james is his father and Ann Worthington is his mother. The 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census you have found are definitely them. My gggreat grandfather was definitely born in shelton, staffordshire. My gggreat grandfather was George Martyn Shufflebottom he is the Martin on the census records why I don't know but it must be him as there is no other George Martin in the census's I will upload the birth certificate for you to look at.
Kind Regards

Then why did she put Kington which is 45 miles away? See post above for suggestion.

Found this on Gen Uki

"BULLEY, a parish in the duchy of Lancaster, in the county of Gloucester, 4 miles to the W. of Gloucester. Newent is its post town. It is not far from the South Wales railway. The living is a perpetual curacy annexed to the vicarage of Churcham, in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol. The church is small and partly in the Norman style."

this site will has information on the Bulley Parish records

I know there is another thread, but re. this query - I see Kington is mentioned - area could maybe be Brilley? I think this is the most likely thing really as she is consistent about her birthplace.

Morning Martin
It is much better if you stick to one thread about the same family ,then all your information is together
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1248110

It also gives us a better view of what has been searched already

I've looked for Bulley

it does show up on the free place search on www.britishorigins.com/

but I no longer have a subscription to view where it says it is!

Bulley shows up

but not Bulley, Herefordshire

so I wonder if the county is wrong

I'm thinking that Andrew and Henery were James' children by a first marriage .... they were both born in Worcester

Then he married Ann ................. but I wonder if that was Ann Worthington or another Ann

You see ............. on the 1841 there is James, followed by Andrew and Henry, then comes Ann and Deborah

The usual way of putting the names down by the census enumerator was
head of house
wife
children in order of age

It didn't always happen .......... but to find one person out of order, is often suspicious.

Then he says on the 1851 census that Ann was "formerly servent" ....... very strange!

Martin

I have to ask

How do you know that Ann Worthington married James Shufflebottom?

I can find no trace of such a marriage.

Have you got the birth certificate for one of the children giving this information?

Martin ... another note for you. Ages in the 1841 census for all persons over the age of 15 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5. Occasionally you will find records where this has not been done.

In addition, the 1841 Census did not give relationships between people living in the same house, and only told you if they were born In County (y for yes) or Not in County (n for no), I means Ireland, S = Scotland, and F = Foreign.
