The owner of the Smith/Parret tree seems to be the great grandaughter of Frederick Coombs/John Ufton. |

The Smith/parrot tree states he was born John William Ufton. He was dismissed from the army and changed his name before enlisting in a different regiment. |

Several trees on ancestry suggest that he is the son of Stanfield Ufton but one has a copy of the marriage certificate which shows the father was Frederick Coombs. |

I am assuming you do not have the marriage certificate as you assumed the wrong year. Once you have the certificate you will have his Father's name, and then we have more chance of finding him in the censuses. |
