Karen,

Is that marriage a submitted entry on the IGI? Submitted entries are not always reliable - you need to check them against parish records.

There is a marriage for a William Gracie to a Betty in New Abbey in 1788 but not to a Betty Patterson and the marriage was on 1/9/1788 - if you look at the image, it will probably show a whole page of marriages and you should be able to see all the marriages for that year.

Edit: just double checked that marriage on scotlandspeople and it is for William Gracie and Betty Paterson (I spelt it Patterson yesterday!)

Have you tried scotlandspeople OPR (old parish records)? A lot of them are on the IGI but there may be some that are not.

I see that the record on the IGI for William bap 1817 Is a submitted record - submitted records should be treated cautiously - some of them are not to be trusted. The extracted records are usually accurate, allowing for transcriptions errors, as they are taken from parish records.

Having said that, William's baptism appears to be on scotlandspeople (unless there was another William Gordon baptised in Balmaclellen on the 26/1/1817!). If you look at the image, there may be some indication of who the father was. The baptism is just under Gordon.

Civil registration in Scotland did not start until 1855................so no certs until then.

Try looking on the IGI.........I've given you the web address.

If William was baptised (and therefore born) before his mother married, he was illegitimate.

Illegitimate actually means conceived out of wedlock............

Sorry, Karen, I can't find any more info on the family. There do not seem to be any births in England to tie up with the children and William only seems to appear in 1851 in England so cannot find his POB..

The IGI is on

www.familysearch.org

It is FREE.

Adding ANY posting to your thread moves it up the board....

Karen is just starting, Flick, she probably doesn't know about the IGI.

In the 1861, all the children except Helen are shown as being born in England. Helen is shown as Newalley, Stewarty of Kirkcudbrightshire - but I think that should be New Abbey.

Helen shown as Miller's wife

It is unfair to people who have helped you, to delete threads, then start again.

If a query isn't fully resolved, just nudge your thread up the board..............and you could add 'still looking' to the title

It's OK Karen - the rule is one thread per family. It is better to continue a thread so that any info that has already been found is not looked for again.

I think this is Karen's James in 1891:

1891 Scotland Census
about James Gracie
Name: James Gracie
Age: 32
Estimated birth year: abt 1859
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Janet Gracie
Gender: Male
Where born: England
Registration Number: 626B
Registration district: Calderhead
Civil Parish: Shotts
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Old Row
Occupation: Coachman
ED: 5
Household schedule number: 45
Line: 16
Roll: CSSCT1891_228
Household Members: Name Age
James Gracie 32
Janet Gracie 23 b Shotts
Jane Gracie 2 b Anderton
Wm Gracie 9 Mths bShotts

I advised Karen to look for James and Janet's marriage on scotlandspeople, which she must have done to get his parents.
