I have located my great grandfather as being:

Henry Wiles, born abt 1860 in North Cave, Yorkshire, who later lived in Barnsley, and then Keighley.

He was married to Sarah Ellen Robinson, then on her death to Mary Ellen MacDonald.

I am now trying to prove his birth by locating his parents, but I have been unable to find a birth record, and therefore order a certificate.

The 1861 census appears to contain a spelling error by the census official, and Henry and family's name is spelled Wilds instead of Wiles. His father is listed as William, his mother Sarah (nee Statham), and his brother William.

Can anybody help with locating Henry's birth record to prove that his parents are William and Sarah?

Thanks

jax

Have you got either of his marriage certs ? as that should tell you who his father was

This is the only birth I can see around that time in East Yorkshire:-

Name: Henry Wiles
Year of Registration: 1862
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Sculcoates
County: Yorkshire - East Riding
Volume: 9d
Page: 149

However if you have found him in the 1861 census then this can't be him.

It is possible that his birth was not registered at all because there were no penalties for not registering a birth until 1875. Before that date a lot of people didn't bother to register births.

I don't see a marriage for William Wiles + Sarah Statham. Do you have her name from the brother's birth certificate, or have you found a marriage?

Marriages Sep 1858
Stather Sarah Howden 9d 131
Wiles William Howden 9d 131

That is also how she appears in the 1851 census.

Are you the person who has corrected "Wilds" at Ancestry in 1861? or are you in touch with that person?

Births Dec 1856
Stather William Wiles Howden 9d 83

Thanks for the quick feedback.... JaneyCanuck: I did not correct the Wilds entry, but I am in contact with the person who did, who had alerted me to the possibility that this was part of my tree.... another fact is that members of the Wiles/Stather family that this person belongs to lived in various properties in the same street that I know my great grandfather lived in in Barnsley, Copper Street. So it seems likely that this "Wilds" is in fact Wiles and my great grandfather's parents – but I'd like the birth record to prove it!

Thereby hangs your problem !

You could search for certificate references on freebmd

Marriages Dec 1885 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bagshaw Sarah Louisa Barnsley 9c 240
Hesslegrave Edward Albert Barnsley 9c 240
Robinson Sarah Ellen Barnsley 9c 240
Wiles Henry Barnsley 9c 240

Once you have determined his father's name you might be able to confirm or rule out the 1861 entry you found under Wilds.

It does look like Henry's birth wasn't registered -- at least not in Howden.

If you go to FreeBMD and search for every Henry born in Howden 1857-1860, there isn't one with a surname that fits.

So you've got to get a marriage certificate, to see whether he named his father.

The 1861 just for ref:

William Wilds 28
Sarah Wilds 23
William Wilds 4
Henry Wilds 3 >> it actually says * 2 *, not 3.

Civil Parish: North Cave
County/Island: Yorkshire
Registration district: Howden

Is his age consistent on later censuses?

Looks like his father died in 1862 just looking at the tree on ancestry

I'm interested to know how you know all the ladies maiden names when you don't have any certificates.
Is your info passed onto you from someone else's tree ?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 8 Dec 2010 21:51

Ditto, Mike; that's why I asked: "I don't see a marriage for William Wiles + Sarah Statham. Do you have her name from the brother's birth certificate, or have you found a marriage?"

And it turns out the surname is actually Stather, if it's the right couple. So it does look like it's coming from second- (or fourth-) hand inaccurate info.

The tree on ancestry with over 5000 people in it maybe

FreeBMD marriage index lists William Wiles marriage, registered 1858, Jul-Aug-Sep, Howden district, volume 9d p131

Wife: Sara Stather.

After death of William Wiles, she remarried: William Ellison, reg. 1867, Apr-May-Jun, Howden, vol 9d, p151

jax Report 8 Dec 2010 22:15

You have been given those details Richard why are you telling us again?

jax

Richard Report 8 Dec 2010 22:15

Info on the William Wiles connection comes from another tree on ancestry, which suggests the person I currently have as Henry Wiles' father (George Wiles) is incorrect.

The reason I suspect this is because people from this other tree are shown to live in the same house and other premises in Copper Street, Barnsley, after moving from Cave.

In my tree, George Wiles takes us onto a branch of Wileses that originates in Holme Upon Spalding Moor, which is also in Howden district.
