Hi Michelle
Unfortuntely the 1911 is the last available census until the 1921 is released in 9 or 10 years. You may have some luck with the electoral roll depending on the time frame you are looking for and where.
To order birth, marriage and death certificates order through the GRO on-line. You will need to register on the site but that only takes a couple of minutes and is only needed once. Each certificate costs £9.95 and you will need a credit or debit card. Or you can order through the local council for the area. A quick call to them should provide you with all the information you need on how and where to order and the cost.
A word of warning. Never order from anywhere else on-line. Only use the GRO or the council. Some places charge sky high prices and it is a rip off.
Hope this helps.

Finally found the death John W BURNHAM aged 80 in 1st Q 1949 at Buckrose which fits the family information. So John Read and John Burnham IS the same person and explains why the stories go that Emma Jane threw him out years before!
Do you know if there is any access to Census data after 1911 anywhere? And also how I can obtain birth certificates?

Yikes! the plot thickens - wish someone could speak from the grave. But I am told that the oldies kept saying "what's in the past stays in the past" and I guess they are right....doesn't stop the old mind wandering though. thank you so much.

Astra Report 13 Dec 2010 21:39

The point is are John William Burnham and John Read one and the same person??
There is no death for John Burnham of the right age so did he leave Jane and go off with Emma?
There is a death of a child in Sculcoates in 1894 called John William Burnham so this could have been their first child.
Unfortunately the time line is wrong. He had his first child with Emma in 1897. But stranger things have happened. Ethel Burnham who was actually born in 1898 need not be his child but the product of a dalliance Jane had after he had left. Could be the reason why they never married and why they kept moving around.

It could be that he married Jane Adamson.
She re-marries in 1910 to Harold Atkinson

Wow! you've all been so busy for me. thank you so much. Sad life for Emma Jane ; 7 out of 14 children died. Lots of mystery in the family regarding the changes of name from William to John Read and also the appearance of the name BURNHAM as middle names for some of the children - including my grandad Jack Burnham Read.
Guess if they weren't married, that'll explain why they moved around alot as evidenced in the places of birth for the early children - Ernest, Sydney and Ethel. Anyone got a theory on the usage of the name Burnham: maybe Emma Jane's mother's maiden name?

Whether the marriage was Catholic or not there would still have to be a civil registration. It's looking very much as though they didn't marry.

Thank you for your help so far. Still wondering what happened to Mr Read in 1911 as he's not in the same 1911 Census. I think he lived until the 1940's and was with Emma Jane in Bridlington, Yorkshire in 1913 - the year my grandad was born.
Any further thoughts?
