Kathleen Report 24 Dec 2010 19:01

Hi, I am trying to link up with Emily Davison, she was the suffragett, she was also a cousin of my mother in law. I have tried both the LDS site and Ancestry (1881) and cant find them. Emily was born 1872

Emily Wilding Davison, the daughter of Charles Davison (1822–1893) and Margaret Caisley Davison (1848–1918), was born at at Roxburgh House, Vanbrugh Park Road, Greenwich on 11th October, 1872.

I dont seem to be able to find any of them in any census, I know there were a few siblings and half siblings but as yet I dont have their names. The census would help me locate them if only I could find them.

Both Charles and his wife (his second wife) Margaret were born in Northumberland. I dont know any details fron his first marriage.

If anyone can help me please try, I know its xmas and everyone is busy, I will leave this post on and nudge it up in a few days just in case anyone has time to do a lookup

Thanks all who have helped me, a merry xmas and a very good new year

Well, the above birthplace is wrong I notice, but the parents both born Northumberland so must be them. They were a little tricky though! No luck 1881 as yet.

Suffragettes boycotted the 1911 census, refusing to fill in the form and writing notes in the margins, reports the Times.

One suffragette taking part in the boycott arranged by the Women’s Freedom League wrote: “If I am intelligent enough to fill in this paper, I am intelligent enough to put a cross on a voting paper.”
Another glued a poster over the form stating: “No votes for women, no census.” A piece of paper stuck to the form suggests that the women stayed away from households where the census was taken to attend a protest in Trafalgar Square.

The public protest was reported in The Times on April 3, 1911, but its full extent remained hidden to the public.

A google search reveals that she is on the 1911 census!

On 2 April 1911, the night of the 1911 census, Davison hid in a cupboard in the Palace of Westminster overnight so that on the census form she could legitimately give her place of residence that night as the "House of Commons.
Tony Benn placed a plaque there to commemorate the event. The 1911 census documents that were uncovered state that Emily Wilding Davison was found 'hiding in the crypt' in the Houses of Parliament.

Kathleen Report 24 Dec 2010 20:46

Hi, yes all the above seem to fit around the family, I am going to look around and see if I can find the marriage of Charles and Margaret. I am not sure how up to date free BMD are but will start there.

Emily was found hiding in a cupboard on census night I did find the census page during a search today. That was the 1911 census. Her father had died before then, in 1897 but her mother lived untill 1918, she may well have came back to her birthplace, which was the Morpeth area in Northumberland.

Here is a little part of what I found today

Davison was born in Blackheath, London, the daughter of Charles Davison (of Morpeth, Northumberland) and Margaret Davison (of Longhorsley, Northumberland), with two sisters and a brother, and many half-siblings (from her father's first marriage) including a half-brother, retired naval captain Henry Jocelyn Davison, who gave evidence at her inquest.

This is an early day search, there is still so much to look for.

Thanks for your help on this very cold xmas eve

Cheers
Kathy
