Hi all,

Can someone please check the 1841 census for Duncan Livingston c1810 b Argyll, his children names were Isabella c1828, Malcolm c1833, Duncan c1836 and Dugald c1838, I m not sure of his wife, but could be Ann.

I do not have any further details of Scottish records. They arrived in Australia in 1850.

Thank you, gee that was quick went to get a cuppa & there were already 4 replies.

Helen, I do not think that is the right Census, fathers age out about 20 years, unless he put his age down on the departure records.

Thanks alviegal, would never have thought Isabella as Elizabeth, things we learn.

There was no Neil that arrived in Australia, can you see a death for him?

Thanks

Helen

Thanks AOGG, looks like Duncan put his age down when leaving from Plymouth.

Can I ask another question, can you find a marriage of Duncan to Christine/a?? age on shipping records 25, I think that they had 2 children Ann c1847 Archibald c1850 who were also on the same boat.

If that is the case Ann must have died.

"Welcome to the What's in a Name website

This website will tell you where Personal Names, First Names or Given Names are thought to have originated and what they originally meant. We have also recorded Variations, Pet Names, Diminutives and Abbreviations that you may have to consider when searching in genealogical databases and old records.

The site is currently being developed. It was started when we found that many forenames in Scotland were interchangeable in ways not obvious to a non-Scot. Many people know that Jane is the same as Jean and Elizabeth is the same as Isabel/Isobel in Scotland, but did you know that Patrick and Peter are often interchangeable? "

Also from http://www.rampantscotland.com/forenames/blnames_index.htm

Elizabeth / Lisa
Derived from the Hebrew "Elisheba" or "oath of God". In Scotland the name has often been used as "Isobel" and the Gaelic version is Elisaid or Elasaid while the diminutive "Betty" in Gaelic is Beitidh. There are many other pet names derived from Elizabeth and "Lisa" has also become popular in Scotland - Lisa is 59th most recorded name in 1999 while Elizabeth was 56th. Other popular versions of the name in Scotland are "Beth" (52nd most used, though it may be derived from the Gaelic "beatha" meaning "life") and Elspeth.

I have quite a few instances in my tree where Elizabeths have been found as Isabels.

Hello William, welcome to the boards.

You would do much better to start your own thread about your family.

Go to Find Ancestors on the left of this page, click and then click on Add Topic
which is the purple box top right.

Then you can ask for whatever help you need in researching your ancestors. Mind and put a heading, something like Ann Taylor, Aberdeenshire.

Good luck Liz
