Find Ancestors

I am visiting both Durham and N.O.T. in the summer and would like some confirmation of addresses.
census 1861 - Clayton St West St John Northumberland
census 1891 - Campbell St Westgate St Pauls
One of my ancesters were registered ascoach/carriage makers on the census is there anywhere I could find if they owned their own business, and another worked on the railway but how do I find out which one?

Oh and if I went to the records office what information could I get there?

Newcastle was in Northumberland until 1974 when Tyne & Wear was created, so archives may have moved around a bit!

Try e-mailing the local archives before you go, to see what info is where etc., or try the Railway Museum in York - they may know where to look as well.

June....The Railway would be NER (North Eastern Railway) Ncle Central Station is in the area you are looking at.
Blanford St Archives is just a couple minutes away .
Clayton St is in the same vicinity...

Northumberland Archives are no longer at County Hall, they are at Wooodhorn, please see link below

although they deal mainly with Northumberland, for Newcastle it would probably better to try the Tyne and Wear archives their website is

There is also Newcastle City Library that has a huge new floor devoted to genealogy. The library just off Northumberland Street, I visited it while over there last summer and was very impressed.

There is also Bolbeck Hall just down from the Central Station.

Can I suggest doing as much leg work as possible before you get there it certainly saved me lots of time.

You're welcome, we were in the Durham/Northumberland area for 2 months and I only managed about 8 hours research time and I never got to Woodhorn!
Beware the North East is a beautiful place.

I hope you will enjoy your visit to Newcastle, we have masses of places to see that is Just in the town centre.

There is the archives in the Discovery Museums. the staff are very polite and helpful.
Newcastle Cty library is beautiful since they rebuilt it..good for the Newspapers.ie Obituaries ect...I have spent many hours in here!

Sorry for late reply but have just seen your query re: Durham/Northumberland records. If its Church records your after the Archives at Discovery Museum has those for St Johns, some as far back as 1587, St Pauls Chapel is also listed in St Johns records & as Westgate is close by to St Johns I assume thats the one you want.
Come back to me if its other info you want & I'll try to find out where it may be held.

Just a thought, as both the Discovery Museum & The library are usually quite busy my advice is to book a viewer/Screen about a week earlier than your visit.
I believe both have Census records from 1841.

Well I'm back on the trail again after several months hiccups. We are now definately going to NE for a week staying in Newcastle and visiting Durham and I am at a loss where to go first. Would like to visit area where my grandad was born - Cambell ? St Westgate and also the church where he was baptised - unfortunately I don't know which one it is - the details I have are:
George Coulson
Baptisim: 7 August 1898 - Newcastle
Parents : Richard Stobart Coulson & Elizabeth Coulson

The family have lived in various areas and I would like to try and see as much as I can - William St Westgate, Clayton St West - St John
Durham_ Gilesgate and Claypath and finally Nylam St? Gateshead.

I know this is a bit rambling but if anyone could point me in the right direction as to how I get to see these places I would be very grateful.

I would suggest that the Gateshead address is Wylam St..............

I think "Nylam Street" might actually be Wylam Street in Gateshead

have you looked on google / google maps maps to see if they are still there, Wylam Street seems to have been redeveloped, it's not far from the Gateshead metro station.

If the carriage makers had their own business, they might be listed in Slaters Directory, or similar.
