I am trying to find descendants of my great grandfather's brothers and sisters. They lived in Erdington, Warwickshire
John Slater Foster was a brass founder master born in Darlaston, Staffordshire and son of Samuel S. Foster and Mary Warrender. He married Kate Critchley from King’s Stanley, Gloucestershire. Kate was the 3rd child of Henry Critchley and Ellen Godsell. John and Kate had several children:
1) Mary E (Ellen I presume after her grandmother Ellen Godsell) Foster born 1872. 2) Carl Critchley Foster born 1874 married Bertha Adelaide “Evans”? – in 1911 one daughter called Alice Margaret Evans Foster born 1905.
3) Lionel Fred Foster born 1877 and married to Ethel Maud Walker, my great grandparents so I have all of their descendance.
4) Nell Foster married to ? and had a son named Jack ? 5) Allan Geoffrey (Geoff) Foster born born 1881 and died 1967. He married Ethel ? and in 1911 had one daughter Audrey Joan aged one. Had 2 more children afterwards, Cyntia (who left for New Zealand later) and John. 6) Irene Beatrix Foster born 1882 and married to her first cousin Frank Cecil Critchey in 1916 (Kate's nephew) They had no children.
BUT: I’m now wondering if in fact Mary E (Ellen) was in fact Nell and that they were one person as on the 1891 census there are Mary E, Carl C, Lionel F,Allan G and Irene B with no mention of another girl.
Kate Critchley Foster died young in 1886 at the age of 36 and John Slater Foster got remarried to a girl called Elizabeth Alice, born in Billesdon, Leicester, who is living with him and all the children in 1891 in Erdington. They had a daughter called Dorothy Elizabeth (therefore my great grandfather's half-sister) in 1993.
If anyone has any information about this family, I'd be most interested

If you use FreeBMD
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
you can firm up some of the vague parts of your info. For instance, if you search for th emarriage of John Slater Foster to Elizabeth Alice, you will have her surname (click on the page number beside his name). You can then find her birth. (She was no "girl" in 1890.)
The question about Mary E's name could also be answered by finding her birth (Yes, "Nell" is very likely Mary Ellen, I would say), and there is a 1896 marriage in Aston registration district that matches her name. You can easily find Allan Geoffrey Foster's wife's name too, etc.
Births after 1911 can be searched by the combination of surname and mother's surname. For instance, there is a Foster birth in 1914 in Aston with the mother's surname of Allan Geoffrey's wife.
This is all way too much fun for someone else to do for you!
And it will give you a number of other names that you can search trees here at GR for.

You're very welcome. I've never been sure whether to kiss or curse the person who first pointed me at FreeBMD nearly 8 years ago. ;)
My very first search turned up the mystery that I have spent the years since solving ... and I'm not done yet ...

I've found My gg grandfather's second wife's surname, and I've also found Mary EZllen Foster's marriage in 1896. However I don't seem to understand how I can find the name of her husband?

Next, you'll be spending the grocery money on a subscription at Ancestry! And certificates ... (The voice of experience speaks.)
Thanks Flick -- I'm supposed to be working so I hadn't gone beyond Bill or Brown. ;)
Benedicte -- when you've got the various offspring and their marriages and kids sorted as far as you can, go ahead and post an updated list (in this thread) of each family unit -- we generally say births up to the early 1920s, as beyond that, people may be living.
Ancestry has an index of deaths up to 2005 (showing and searchable by age at death / year of birth, and exact date of birth after 1969), so finding death dates and places for the various names could help you also, and those of us with subscriptions can do that (as Flick did there). Info about births and marriages of possibly living people can be sent to you by private message.

Now that I've got plenty of information about the Foster family in Erdington I'm now tying to go back to our ancestors but have got stuck with my gggg grandfather, Thomas Foster.
Thomas Foster born around 1783 in Darlaston, a woodscrew maker. In the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses he is living with his second wife, Sarah (33 years younger than him). He is still working at 88 years old (1871) with around 20 employees. His son, Samuel Slater Foster got married to Mary Warrender in 1839 and appears to have worked for him. I can't find out who Thomas Foster's first wife (and mother of Samuel) is. I presume her surname must have been Slater but just an idea. Does anyone have any ideas on how to find this out by any chance? I've been trying for a while and don't seem to be getting anywhere. I can't find him on the 1841 census.
