I have had a email off a lady who is wondering if her Jane GARLAND and my Jane Garland are the same.

I am trying to see if they are but some things dont match up but a lot of other things do.

My Jane Garland married (or i think they did) a William STRANGE. I do not know the date and have been trying to look to find them but no luck. according to the 1881 census they both were born in North Petherton, Somerset. William born 1839 and Jane born in 1840. He was a cooper and she was a dressmaker.

I am wondering if anyone could possibly find a marriage for them? i would like to find a marriage cert. so i could find the fathers names and occupations.

Also I am wondering how many Garland families there were in the 1841 census for North Petherton, Devon. because i believe Jane's father was Charles and mother Ann but i am wondering if there is another Jane in the town...maybe cousin? born around the same time?

my great great grandfather was David James Strange and according to his birth certificate (he was born 1868 in cardiff), father was william strange and mother was jane strange formerly garland.

its puzzling me why i cannot find a marriage certificate, unless they married in a church.

theer are a few at South Petherton but not Jane

I am wondering how the Jane your contact has doesn't match up?
Even if they married in church - as most people did - it should still be registered.

Michael Foster's 'A Comedy of Errors or The Marriage Records of England and Wales 1837-1899'

you will soon realise why some marriage records cannot be found

well the thing is her jane has got a father also Charles and same brothers that i have for my jane. But the thing is her Jane had 3 children: John (1858), William (1860) and tom (1864). But their surnames are Garland.

My Jane did have a John and Tom (exactly the same birth years) but their surnames are Strange not Garland. And i know the family (my family) moved down to Cardiff from Somerset.

I think they are the same family but it is puzzling me that how come by her records they are Garland and by mine they are Strange's

Quite possible her sons were illegitimate and took on William's surname. Have you found their births on Freebmd?

havent looked, only just had a email about it. yeah i thought that because it matches up because Jane's son (the ladys family), John Henry Garland born in 1858 in Newport, wales. But it strange how (if he was illegitimate) he wasnt with the Strange family in the census, when they moved. I wondering if he was left with the gandparents?

actuallly with grandfather and probably his mother, Charles Garland age 41 is a widower, Jane and Charles are children and John is grand son

The Sparks and the Mary Morris are not in the household they are seperate houses-badly transcribed

what abt in 1871? can you find him anywhere?

the remaining Census returns give North Pethertton as his birth place, so as he lived there from a very young age perhaps he thought he was born there
