Find Ancestors

Can someone please help. I am doing this for an elderly friend. Victor Bernard Portman born 1891 Sydney. I am trying to find out more info on his parents. Bernard Portman and Frances Auroa Emperor, they married 1888 NSW, On Victor's WW1 Army records his father is recorded as Sir Bernard Portman. We were told he was born in Victoria, but I cant find his birth. Also that he was part of a wealthy family in the UK, but unable to prove any of this. We would love any info on Bernard and Frances, where they were born, parents etc. We do know that they both came to NZ and have died here. Certificates dont give names of parents. Would appreciate any help, many thanks.

Deaths Nicholaus Emperor Vic. 1866 Reg. 11814 aged 43 yrs. father unknown;

Ellen Emperor, Vic. 1876, Reg. 9502, age 46 years, father unknown.

I would hazard a guess that Ellen's name is McGillicuddy, with mistranscription along the way.

Nothing on Bernard so far.

I think that Julie Anne means, an elderly friend is looking for information on Victor, he would be 120 years of age if he was still alive!!

Just had a look at Victor's service record, there is two enrolments, the first one states his father is Sir, the second one does not say his father is Sir.

INQUESTS.
FATAL STREET ACCIDENT.
Dr. Youl, the citty coroner, held an inquest on Saturday, at the Melbourne Hospital, on the body of Ellen Emperor, the woman who died from the effects of being ran over by a dray at the intersection of Bourke and William streets.
Angelina Emperor, daughter of the deceased, deposed that her mother was a hawker, and very deaf. Deceased lost her husband through a mining accident at Sandhurst, and had since had a hard struggle to make a living. She had been very strange in her manner since her husband's death, and her children thought she had never got over the shock of her bereavement. Four months ago she broke her arm by a fall in
Elisabeth street.
Francis M'Cartney, leather cutter, residing at Franklin street, deposed that on the evening of the 28th ult, at half past six o'clock, he was at the corner of William and Bourke streets. He saw a spring dray come round the corner of Bourke street the horse going at a slow trot. There was a light on the dray. A woman was crossing William-street at the time, and was knocked down and run over by the dray. He (witness) did not hear the driver call out. The latter waa standing up, and did not stop his horse, but went on as if nothing had happened. Seeing that thewoman was hurt, witness called to some passers by to attend to her while he went after the dray. He told the driver, a man named Andrew Keene, in the employ of a drayman named Brennan, that he had run over a woman. Keene appeared much surprised, and said that such was impossible. Witness then took the number of the dray, and went back to deceased. She was still lying on the road, about six yards from the pavement, and was being attended to by Constable Collarton. As she seemed seriously injured, a cab was procured, in which she was taken to the hospital.
Mr. Kennedy, resident surgeon at the Melbourne Hospital, deposed that the deceased died 23 hours after admission to the hospital. He had made a post mortem examination, and had found that the cause of death was laceration of the liver from external violence.
The jury returned the following verdict:
-"The deceased, Ellen Emperor, died of rupture of the liver, caused by being accidentally run over by a dray in Melbourne on the night of the 28th June. The jury think the conduct of the driver, Andrew Keene, was heartless in not stopping after the accident."

A miner, Nicholas Emperor, was lately killed in a claim in the Bendigo District. We learn with regret that the mind of his widow has since given way, and that her removal to the Yarra Bend has been necessary. Seven children are left helpless by this double calamity.

Btw Bernard was born c1849 according to his age at death. Unlikely to be reg in Victoria.

There is a Wm Thos PORTMAN who arrived as crew of the Cambodia to Victoria in 1852. Not much else to be found for this surname in early Vic.

Nicholas is interred at Bendigo Cemetery; they may be able to provide more details.

By the by, Frances had a daughter, Frances EMPEROR, in 1880 in Carlton, father not stated (reg 14147).
