my goodness .....

the 1881 census says this

Name: Mary Goldsmith
[Mary Lees] <<<<<<<<<
Age: 51
Estimated birth year: abt 1830
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: James E. Goldsmith
Mother's name: Delilah Lees <<<<<<<<<
Gender: Female
Where born: Peterworth, Warwickshire, England

Civil Parish: Denton
County/Island: Sussex

and it's pretty easy to find that marraige

chrissie x

edit which perfectly matches his death ?

Deaths Jun 1894
Goldsmith James Erasmus 66 Lewes 2b 108

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 31 Jan 2011 20:08

that family is in the 1841 census in Tonbridge but there is no James ....... ?

John Goldsmith 45
Sarah Goldsmith 40
Georgiana Goldsmith 20
Henry Goldsmith 15
John Goldsmith 13
Joseph Goldsmith 10
Sarah Goldsmith 8
Thomas Goldsmith 6

edit John Goldsmith is a Grocer

these don't fit with James being a mariner in the censuses with Mary though ...........

if you had searched all records would you not have seen teh censuses that show him as a mariner, to explain why he was called captain ?

clearly the only way to go farther is to get a child's birth certificate to get Mary's name, find the marriage, get the marriage certificate to get James father's name ..........

if that is your James you will find Sarah Cornelia Goldsmith's christening 1833 at

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

and it gives the names of her parents

so you could search there for their marriage and other children

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 31 Jan 2011 20:03

the 1851 census

Name: James Goldsmith
Age: 26
Estimated birth year: abt 1825
Relation: Brother
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: Tonbridge, Kent, England

Civil Parish: Tonbridge
Town: Tonbridge
County/Island: Kent
Country: England

Registration district: Tunbridge
Sub-registration district: Tunbridge
ED, institution, or vessel: 1d
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 148
Household Members:
Name Age
George Card 67
Elizabeth Card 67
Charles Card 41
Susan Card 30
Sarah Ann Card 3
James Goldsmith 26
Sarah Camelia Goldsmith 19

in fact that is not what it says, the Goldsmiths are brother and sister and they are not related to the Cards or living with them

James is a Grocer and Baker and for Sarah Cornelia it says Grocers Daughter so maybe the parents were away from home

What are the birth dates of the children?

Catherine

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 31 Jan 2011 19:40

any one of the children's birth certificates will give you Mary's surname

you will then look for the marriage and get the marriage certificate to learn the names of the fathers of James and Mary

censuses say James was born in Tonbridge, Kent ...

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

christening of James Goldsmith 1824 Tunbridge Kent ........ ?

only if the father's name matches the name on the marriage certificate

no more mysterious than any other birth before registration

where exactly have you looked and what certificates have you got in order to solve this mystery?

Nickif65 Report 31 Jan 2011 19:32

Ok I get the message, but as my elderly mother and even older relatives would like to solve the mystery, its near enough urgent to us.

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 31 Jan 2011 19:30

desperate, maybe .......... urgent, no ...............

some people's searches really are urgent: looking for an elderly parent or parent's elderly sibling before they die, looking for family because of medical problems .........

Type of thread I ignore for the very reason that URGENT annoys me

Nickif65

Nickif65 Report 31 Jan 2011 19:28

Oh, we also believe that he was known as Captain, weather this was just a nickname or maybe he was actually a sea Captain of some sort.
Iv searched ALL records and have drawn a blank.

Nickif65

Nickif65 Report 31 Jan 2011 19:25

The urgency is because Iv been searching for a long time and now want answers plus the word "urgent" gets peoples attention, lol.
I believe they are from the Sussex area. My grandfather was born in Newhaven, Sussex if that is any help.

I certainly wondered the same thing !

freebmd

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

certainly if I were so anxious I would look for his marraige ............ no one else can becaus we don't know where he lived ...... and get his marriage certificate which will say the fathers of James and Mary .........

I would also look in the familysearch sites for his christening

I like this part in the instructions for posting

........ Give as much detail as possible when explaining who you are trying to find. If known, try putting the name, place of birth and year of birth in the subject line of your thread. All known information will make it much easier for volunteer helpers to help you. .........
