I am trying to trace a possible link to my grandfather, William, born 1892, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire. If my search is correct, then I believe that my grandfather would have siblings, Mary Hannah born 1879 ish, Thomas born 1884 ish, Evelyn born 1899 ish. His mother may have been Hannah born about 1860, possibly the second wife of my g/grandfather also called William born about 1857 at Cleakheaton Yorkshire. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who may have some information.

I am trying to verify whether my g/grandfather and his family are connected to my grandfather. I have no information relating to my grandfather before 1949, the year I was born. All I have is his passport dating 1966 and his 'Continuous Certificate of Discharge' book for the periods 1921 - 1923 when he was a merchant crewman working as a steward. I have no address/es from his birthdate to 1932. I am relatively new to researching my family history so I am 'floundering' a little at the moment.

Problem number one: There is no record of the birth of a William Jackson in Ashton Under Lyne in 1891/2.

Where did you establish where and when he was born?

Ideally you need to obtain a copy of his marriage certificate to see who is named as his father on that. That information may help to identify William in earlier census records.

Linda, the first place to start would be with your grandfather's marriage.

His marriage certificate should confirm his age and his father's name.

Who did he marry, and when?

Also, if you know when and where he died we may be able to confirm birth date from his death record.

I established and then verified that my grandfather was born 1892, Ashton-Under-Lyne. I have known for a long time that he came from the Manchester area. I have his Continuous Certificate of Discharge Book for the periods 1921 - 1923 when he served in the merchant navy as a steward. There is, unfortunately, no other useful information apart from the ships he worked on. I have found it to be minefield looking through the various links at the National Archives. I am a beginner at tracing my family history so am finding it all a bit daunting.

I obtained his birth details from Vol 8 Page 490, period 2nd quarter 1892, district Ashton-Under-Lyne in the BMD records.

The problem is I am trying to verify if Mary Hannah is one of my grandfather's siblings. I have a copy of what I believe may be my g.father's birth cert. Until I can establish if he is indeed my grandfather, I have very little to go on. I have his 'Continuous Certificate of Discharge' Book from the merchant navy, when he worked as a steward between 1921-1923. I am currently trying to trace links through that, but it is proving to be a minefield.

For future reference, FreeBMD is probably the best site for searching the records - http://www.freebmd.org.uk (and it's free).

Linda, can you tell us everything it says on this birth certificate? Father's name and occupation, mother's maiden name, address, exact date, etc.

If you could also answer who your grandfather married (where & when if you know) and where & when he died then we can start to piece it all together.

The details I gave I obtained in 2009 and I must admit that I have tried to find them again, without success. I started and then had to leave the research in that year. I have just started to pick it up again. I have verified that my g.father married my g.mother, Ada May Sexton in November 1923 at Willesden, Marriage Register, 4th quarter period 1923, volume 3a, page 623. It is the information prior to the marriage that I have some uncertainty about.

It is unfortunate that I know so very liitle about my paternal g.father. He died 17 October 1974 in Thurrock Essex. Assuming that the birth cert I have obtained is for my g.father born 6 April1892, birth registered 16 May 1892. I have the following information:

Father; William Beaumont, Occupation Iron Turner, Mother: Hannah Beaumont (formerly ?????field) cannot make out maiden name! Address 84 Birch Street, Ashton-Under-Lyne. My grandparents married 6 November 1923 at Willesden, London. My g.Mother's name was Ada May Sexton (originally from Reading. Berks and later from Edmonton London.
