Nice to see Lee's interested too.

Not having any luck with the death of Isaac or Alice Owens. Wondered whether Alice might have had incredibly bad luck -- an Isaac Owens was killed in WWI on 9 Aug 1917, but he seems to have been a Canadian born in 1895 in Scotland, so maybe a little young. ;)

Glad you looked, LB, because I just went all the way through them and managed to miss the reference to the stepchild!

Good find with the Service Records, JaneyCanuck. Just been looking at them and I think it says that one of George's stepchildren was Charles born Wells 29.11.11 which fits in with birth registration that I gave with mother's maiden name of 'Chandler'

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 16 Apr 2011 18:42

Antipodes, that info was all posted above.

There's no Alice G* Chandler birth, or Alice Chandler birth in Epsom, to match, unfortunately.

Could she possibly have married again??

Marriages Jun 1917
Owens Isaac Penfold Bridgwater 5c 541
Penfold Alice G Owens Bridgwater 5c 541

I don't see a death for George E Penfold (or Alice G Penfold) in England/Wales but there is

Name: PENFOLD
Initials: G E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Dorsetshire Regiment
Unit Text: 5th Bn.
Date of Death: 05/10/1916
Service No: 3/8063
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Screen Wall. 1 "C." B. 1141.
Cemetery: GREENWICH CEMETERY

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards
Name: George E Penfold
Regiment or Corps: 1st Dorsetshire Regiment
Regimental Number: 3/8063
- image is annoted D of W 8-10-16

although the right George would presumably have been in his 40s.

Service record for George Edward Penfold at Ancestry shows he was in Gallipoli and died of wounds in England.

Oh yes. The military record contains a letter to Mrs. Alice G Owens, 1 Court Moat Lane, Bridgwater, regarding the forwarding of his medals. Full name: ALICE GRISHILDA OWENS.

image:
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/Browse/view.aspx?dbid=1219&path=P.Pe.Pen.10590&sid=&gskw=George+Edward+Penfold

pages 10606 and 10607 show her signed receipts for what appears to be pension dated 1920 and 1921, but only her given name (and initial on the second one) has survived as the pages are damaged.

Penfold had quite a disciplinary record. ;) Using disrespectful language in front of superior officer, drinking from his water bottle w/o permission, and back in England after an injury before returning to the front, a lot of failing to return on time from passes.

JaneyCanuck Report 16 Apr 2011 18:21

Much better time/place line. ;)

I hate that at Ancestry you can't really search deaths by year of birth up until 1969! (with FreeBMD not being complete up to that year)

Looks like Alice might have remarried

All the children were born in Glastonbury and Glastonbury comes under the registration district of Wells

So this could be the death of Fred

Deaths Mar 1912
Alford Fred 42 Wells 5c 644

These are the children born under the Registration district of Wells

Births Mar 1903
Alford Gladys Alexandra Wells 5c 411
Births Sep 1905
Alford Gladys Alexandra Wells 5c 421
Births Dec 1906
Alford Frederick Wells 5c 392
Births Dec 1909
Alford Frank Wells 5c 373
Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Mar 1912
Alford Charles MMN Chandler Wells 5c 748

Note the last child registered in March Quarter 1912 has mother's maiden name of 'Chandler' ... but as others have said it would be best to get one of the childrens birth certificates to confirm

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 16 Apr 2011 17:56

I'm just wondering about this Alice, the only Alice G born in the right reg dist at the right time:

Births Dec 1873
Humphris Alice Gertrude Epsom 2a 4

Name: Alice G Humphris
Death Registration Month/Year: 1964
Age at death (estimated): 91
Registration district: Brighton
Inferred County: Sussex
Volume: 5h
Page: 150

But a child's birth certificate will tell all.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 16 Apr 2011 17:51

Can you tell us when and where Fred and Alice died?

Would this be Fred?

Name: Fred Alford
Death Registration Month/Year: 1948
Age at death (estimated): 78
Registration district: Newton Abbot
Inferred County: Devonshire
Volume: 7a
Page: 541

If so, patchem, that's another illustration of why threads about "technical points" -- or as I call them, hypotheticals -- are pointless. I assume the birth record in the opening post came from that now-deleted thread.

Possibly the previous thread was on a technical point as to what to do if no marriage showed?

Thats it then Lee.......as Shirley say's, looks like you will need to purchase one of the childrens birth certificates for the information you need.
Good luck..........PH x

Just curious how much of this info was already found in the previous thread, where that thread is now, and why any user of this website would advise anyone to post a duplicate thread, contrary to the rules of the website.

Not exactly a lot of Alice Grishilda's in free bmd or on any censuses.
