I agree, their was two children, I checked through the census records I had for the family too.

Hulme was a desperate to live in the 1800's, squalid housing.
Parts known as Little Ireland.

Children did die young.

I am fairly confident with a little help I have managed to get this element of my family back to Dublin and William Hickey and Anne Scott.

I can't find a birth for either of them.


I wonder if William was a printer of sorts in Dublin?

Simon...I would not dismiss the Obit for Ann (1854) as Anne (b ? 1852) shows on 1881 census b 1856....!!

I would be very suprised to find 2 Peter Hickey's from Hulme.. Letterpress Printers...

That would make sense that William Hickey emigrated to Manchester with his son James and mother Ann.
He then married aged 21 Martha Moran born Manchester.

I wonder if someone look-up the 1841 census for William and Anne.

That newspaper piece is interesting but my Anne Hickey born in 1852 daughter of Peter Hickey married Josef Gerster.

On 1891 Living as a boarder at 12 Claremont Road, Moss Side, Manchester.

In 1901 living at 239 Cranbourne Road Chorlton-Cum-Hardy, Manchester. Married to Annie Hickey.

So I don't know who that Ann could be unless they had a Anne and an Annie

Simon...May be a long shot but that could figure as I dont see Peter jnr. with Peter and Martha also there is a William Hickey on 1841 Census b abt 1780ish if i remember correctly...believe there was also an Ann....
He is listed as living Chorlton Hulme..dont have access so cant check it out for you.....

I got his name off the 1841 Census record.
His son James, John and Albert were already born
I thought the same particularly as I can't find a Peter Hickey birth.
I did find a James Hickey though.
This is where it becomes guesswork.

Simon.....How do you know Peter was b Dublin...?
Have you checked out the Hickey's Manchester..1841 Census...you may find his family already listed in the area..plenty of them around.....Given it "appears" James is the first born son ( Census 1851) and if they followed traditional naming patterns then Peters father's name may well be a James Hickey

Hi Simon.

The other main records that exist for Ireland were the Tithe Applotment records (compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings over one acre) and Griffith's evaluation (The Primary Valuation was the first full-scale valuation of property in Ireland. It was overseen by Richard Griffith and published between 1847 and 1864). Several sites contain the above info, best to google. Hope this helps you in your search.
