Explains the absence of a death record for Leo:

KEARN Mabel 1888 1947 Southampton USA New York

Ah, so PJ Stokes was likely a witness of the official sort of variety, an employee of the cathedral. So much for that one.

This might be Leo Kearne:

Births Dec 1885
Kearn Leonard Petersfield 2c 144

Marriages Jun 1910
> GRAY Mabel Alice Droxford 2c 261 (see passenger record in post later)
> Kearn Leonard Droxford 2c 261
Oakes Edward Droxford 2c 261
RANDELL Ellen Louisa Droxford 2c 261

Hampshire connections there for sure.

I'm wondering whether Charles Gordon was in the military.

Considered that he might have been from Scotland but didn't turn up any good match in the censuses.

... still don't see him in the 1911 as anything starting with Leo* Kearn*.

No Kearn-Gray or Kearn-Randell births. Also don't see a death for him, including in WWI.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 May 2011 22:24

If you add a postem to the two births at FreeBMD -- and every other record relating to these people -- you might get somebody to respond to you.

The person who added that one just didn't read the instructions. Nobody at FreeBMD reads postems, let alone answers them. They're only for other users' benefit, and there's no way to contact anyone through the FreeBMD system. Always include an email address -- but use an anonymous/throwaway one like at Gmail, to avoid possible spam and protect privacy on line. For instance, I put mine as

xxxxxx at gmail dot com

Lakewood

Lakewood Report 6 May 2011 22:03

Oops just realised that Charles Gordon's birth datee should be 1876/7 since he was 32 on the marriage certificate. His address is Victoria St Westminster.
Witnesses at marriage Leo Kearne and PJ Stokes. Did try looking for them in 1911 census without success.
I didn't add the postem on Freebmd, just read it. I have had email contact with a Gore family member who knows they were twins. Like you I'm puzzled by the difference in ages. Daisy and Violet have the same age on all censuses prior to the 1911 census.
I have both marriage Certs and the father William's occupation as a Captain in the Merchant Navy matches!

Rita's death

Name: Rita D C Brown
Death Registration Month/Year: 1941
Age at death (estimated): 49 = dob c 1892
Registration district: Southwark
Inferred County: London
Volume: 1d
Page: 66

Do you know (or are you) the person who has put this postem on sister Violet's record at FreeBMD? -- unfortunately with no contact info:

Births Mar 1884
Gore Violet Madeline Portsea 2b 519

"21/04/2009 The above person's twin viz Daisy Constance who appears on the same page - 1884B10210 - has a different page number i.e. 519. There is no result for Daisy C. Gore in the "search". Is it because of the different page numbers?"

Births Mar 1884
Gore Daisy Constance Portsea 2b 519

It's all a bit odd. They clearly show as different ages in 1911?

I presume Rita is a nickname acquired because Daisy is a nickname for Marguerite.

1901 in Portsmouth:

Mahala Gore 51 - school swimming instructress
Sydney Gore 22
Daisy Gore 19
Violet Gore 19
Douglas Gore 15

Just trying to see whether figuring out how Charles and Rita crossed paths might help identify him.

Placing my bet -- 1881:

Name: Charles Gordon

Estimated Birth Year: abt 1877

Where born: Liverpool, Lancashire, England

Street Address: School House
Registration district: Barnstable

Chas. John Swain 25 - certified master
Lucy Swain 58
Frank Percy Hughes 8
Arthur Hughes 7 - born Canada
Florence Hughes 5 - "
Charles Gordon 4 - "

Right age, right class. ;)

Hello Lakewood, have you found Charles on any earlier census to confirm his birthplace?

Also, who were the witnesses on the 1909 marriage? They may hold some clues. What was his address in 1909?
