Find Ancestors

Doesn't say deceased but I have William's correct death certificate in 1843. Family lore is that William was a quaker and accountant in America and came home. I have some information from Quaker meetings that he may have gone bankcrupt in Philadelphia. I think he probably ran his own business as a gardener/seedsman and Stephen may have 'upgraded' him and didn't state he was deceased. The only sibling I found on later census was Louisa married to George Leonard and Stephen had his cousin as a witness and someone else wth the name of Clarke.

So William Baker is ag/labourer in 1841 as is Stephen.
William died 1843 Stephen marries and his dad becomes an accountant.
Does it say father deceased on marriage cert.

Hi Mary,
Few snippets for you but no connection to Thornbury however.
On 1841 Stephen's age is 16 which puts his approx birth in 1825. 1851 shows him in 1851 as 28 and the American census in 1860 shows him as 30!
His siblings in 1841 are as you have shown.
Stephen married Emma Carter in 1847 at st Mar'y's church Bitton after his father died in 1843. William was a seedsman/gardener in Barton Hill Bristol on earlier directory and no evidence of him living anywhere else. Stephen's marriage cert shows father's occupation as an accountant.

There are trees on Ancestry that have William Baker 1794 marrying Ann Slain born 1793 Thornbury Gloucestershire and they have
Stephen 1835 did he marry Emma?
Sarah 1828 - 1915
William
Elizabeth
Ann 1838.

Is this the same family Marion?

1851 Ann is in Manchester but back by 1861

Hi Mary,
I lost track of Ann and William's children so no idea who they married. Stephen is my ancestor but the plot thickens because its possible he was not Ann's son and was born in America.... though no evidence of that, except that he was visiting a relative in Pennsilvania in 1860 and is down as being born there. Other census show hm as being born in St George Bristol. You can see how complicated this all gets :0)

The informant on death was her son in law George Leonard and the address given as before was Church Road St George Bristol who was married to Ann's daughter Louisa. Possible death of George Leonard was Sept Qtr 1897 aged 56

Was her daughter Sarah 1828 married John Doggett in 1848.
His parents were James and Charlotte nee Williams 1798,could she have been Hannah/Anns sister.
Charlotte's parents were Steven Williams 1772,I noticed Ann baker had son Stephen 1825.

So if they were sisters and Charlotte married then it would follow that Ann too would be allowed to marry,unless like you say for some reason it was down to William asto the reason you can't find a marriage record.

She is listed as Widow on her death certificate and definately died in Bristol not Shepton Mallett. Thanks to all of you anyway for taking the time. I think this road is going to stay blocked I'm afraid.

PS. There was no sister called Emily by the way and none of her family lived in Shepton, they were all in St. George Bristol and probably had other married names that I have no knowledge of unfortunately.

Sorry to confuse you I type in haste and couldn't correct it quickly enough for all of you when I realised my mistake....had to go and search out the certificate to make sure!! Her death was December 11th 1883 so not the one listed unfortunately ., and yes she is on 1881 as mother in law to George Leonard.

Is she the one on the 1881 census listed as mother-in-law to George Leonard whose wife is Louisa?

No wonder we couldn't find it i know it happens, but the right dates do help.
