Hi. Does anyone know how I would find a maiden name for someone? I have the year they married, who she married, where they lived, years of birth etc etc even marriage entry but they were married 1907 and it doesn't give maiden names til after 1912 apparently??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kerry :-)

Kerry if you go to FreeBMD site, you can put in the surnames or 1st name only to find it :) i.e full name of the groom and 1st name of the bride :)

I am sure that you are NOT stoopid Kerry.

I should like to find out how you are searching which does not bring up this very simple result.

For your future searches, you might like to find out the same??

Tell us how you searched and we can try to see what you are doing wrong!!

You'd need to click on the VOL number in order to get other people in the list. For example.. The Pott/Ridley - click on 333 .. Hope that helps?

If you do a look up for John Ridley at FreeBMD, you'll find

Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Jun 1904 (>99%)
Ridley John Thomas Auckland 10a 333

If you click on the page # link, it'll show all the names on that page.
This will naturally include his spouse (if the index and transcription are correct),
but it will typically show another couple on that page. You normally have to keep your fingers x-ed that she's not called Susannah too.

You can also click on the Auckland link, then the more info "here" link, and see the villages, etc., included in Auckland registration district.

You can use the date, RD, vol#, page# when ordering a cert from the GRO.
However, the GRO isn't the only place one can buy an m.cert.
One can also buy an m.cert from the vicar if it's in the church's current register (not likely to be the case for 1904).
Also, one can buy an m.cert from the local registrar (in Auckland here).
This latter fact is useful for the NE, as many local registers are indexed online.
Also, these indices don't have the same ref info as the GRO index transcribed by FreeBMD.

Try a look up at http://www.northeastbmd.org.uk/

Surname Forename(s) Year District
POTTS Susannah 1904 Durham Western
RIDLEY John T 1904 Durham Western
Register No. - Entry No. - District
C1/6 - 362 - Durham Western (1904)

The ref was taken from the application form.
Note what's indexed here is the actual entry #, not the page #, so there's no question who his bride is.
Register C1 refers to a specific church - the 6 indicates they're on their sixth register here.
They don't tell you what church C1 is - if I had to guess, I'ld say St Andrew Auckland.

Hi Kerry,

It is difficult on which William it is, as sometime men tends to go to Bride's county of birth to marry..

The only way to know which William it is regarding his age, is to obtain their marriage cert.

Sorry,

T
