William Sumner (Born circa 1750) – Brickwall?

I have traced my Sumner family back to a William Sumner who first married a Sarah Bate on 24 May 1774 in St Oswald’s Church, Winwick, Lancashire and then, after her death, married Mary Cawley on 09 November 1797 also in St Oswald’s. I have a copy of the Banns of Marriage for the latter marriage extracted from the parish register however the parents of the bridal couple are not reflected and the witnesses provide no clues.

The Vicar of St Oswald’s has been most helpful and the records of his church reflect the death of a William Sumner in 1822 aged 69 which would make his date of birth about 1752/1753. A search of birth records on numerous genealogical sites for this time period reveals many William Sumner’s however none from Winwick. I am now at the point where I have no idea where my William Sumner hailed from nor who his parents were.

Have I reached the end of the research line or are there other avenues I could explore that I am not aware of bearing in mind that I am in South Africa and am unable to physically access records?

Thank you
Brian

Thank you once again Maddie

I have already visited that site and unfortunately it does not show any new information.
It would appear that marriage certificates in the 18th century do not show the parent's names thus breaking the chain as far as tracing ancestors are concerned.
