Correct re h/h

Incidentally, Matthew Birtwistle & John Pilkington look like professional witnesses - they both appear on all 6 marrs that day. John Pilkington appears on most of the marrs that year.

Of course! Yes I forgot about those at the top :-)

Joy

Joy Report 25 May 2011 22:58

Not positive, but I think that h/h may mean household :-)

Hannah

Hannah Report 25 May 2011 22:52

Thanks for those mgnv, sorry what is the h/h?
Is there any trace of Joseph in 1841 and 1851?

Thanks

Hannah

Hannah Report 25 May 2011 22:35

Lovely, thanks very much. I'm confused as to where he is in 1851 and why he doesn't appear in 1841 but there's only so much you can work out from documents drawn up once a decade!
Thanks for your help

Sheds rather a different light on the other Fieldings in the h/h

The husbands name on the 1861 is Josh (Joseph) - the J is so curly it's been transcribed as Cl and the small "h" easily mistaken as a K, hence Clark.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 May 2011 21:54

Hannah, we've crossed again!

Pretty sure her husband is Joseph, surname mis-spelled in 1871:

RAWSTRON, Joseph Head M 54 1817 Lancashire
RAWSTRON, Elizabeth Wife F 48 1823 Lancashire
RAWSTRON, William H Son M 24 1847 Lancashire
RAWSTRON, Mary Jane Daughter F 21 1850 Lancashire
RAWSTRON, Maria Daughter F 15 1856 Lancashire

Registration District: Blackburn
Sub District: Blackburn
Enumeration District: 53
Ecclesiastical Parish:

Civil Parish: Blackburn
Municipal Borough: Blackburn

Address: Moss Street, Blackburn County: Lancashire

All born Blackburn except Elizabeth who is Rishton

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 May 2011 21:53

Elizabeth (Betty) is with her husband Joseph on other census and there is a possible corresponding marriage on FreeBMD in 1845.

Hannah

Hannah Report 25 May 2011 21:50

Can I be a pain and ask you to check one last little thing for me.....in the 1861 census Elizabeth is with William and Jane at 8 Moore Street, Blackburn. The head is Clark but as I can't spot him in any other census years I'm just wondering if that is really his name. In the other sites you have access to, is he named Clark or something else? He's born c.1817

Thanks for all your help!

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 May 2011 21:38

No, it's Rostron on the original.

FindMyPast transcribed it correctly, but Ancestry thought it said Norton (very frilly writing!)

Hannah

Hannah Report 25 May 2011 21:35

Ahh great thanks. When you say Norton should be Rostron do you mean you can see it says Rostron on the original doc and it's been transcribed incorrectly? I'm just wondering if the "father" that is later on the 1861 census record with Elizabeth/Betty and the children was maybe someone who came along later and they took his name when they married.... if that makes sense....and Norton was actually William and Mary's original name?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 May 2011 21:32

Hannah, our posts crossed - see mine timed 21: 30

Hannah

Hannah Report 25 May 2011 21:31

Does it say who the head is and how all the others are related to the head?

Thanks

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 May 2011 21:30

Have had a look at the original image again, it originally said Betty was the head and then that's been crossed out and "lodger" written.

There has been a line drawn after John Preston. I would therefore say that Betty and the two children are a household on their own.

As to the lodger status - perhaps she was renting some rooms?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 25 May 2011 21:24

These are the other residents of 7 Canning street:

Name Age
Jonathan Fielding 51
Jane Fielding 56
Robert Fielding 19
Catharine Fielding 16
Jonathan Fielding 13
William Fielding 10
Ann Pretton 25
John Preston 1
Beth Norton 28
Wm Henry Norton 5
Mary Jane Norton 1

This is from a different transcription - the Nortons are actually the Rostrons.

It's hard to be sure if this is all one household , or if it's shared occupancy.

Hannah

Hannah Report 25 May 2011 21:21

Thanks very much, appreciate it!

MarieCeleste

Hannah - the actual image appears to be missing!

Will keep looking.

Hannah

Hannah Report 25 May 2011 21:15

Thanks very much, if Betty is a lodger and the rest are children, does it say who the head of the household is?

Thanks
