Grrrrrrr!!! This is far too hard. I have just found another tree with more Ranger types born and bred in Hindon Wiltshire. Waiting for enlightenment and information.

Some good detective work there! Quite a long to do list.

Only way I can do that is visit the local Family History Centre and ask to look at the microfilm of the entry. That'll have to go in my gunna list.

Lets talk about transcriptions. I was convinced Martha Target did not marry Edward Ranger, then I found this....

Thanks Andy, I would really like it to be so and I did actually go through the Rainger names just in case. George Ranger was transported to Oz in 1849 and married there c1859.

Of course, keeping an open mind, he could have married before he fell foul of the law. Also I don't think he was a blacksmith. I'll have to check for sure but I think on his Cert of Freedom he was a butcher.

Makes it difficult to find people when the entries are mistranscribed to that extent!!!

The death cert will normally only show the name of the person registering the death, and that can be anybody.You may get lucky if a family member registered the death.

The census I posted for George Ranger is in Dorset, so shows him as born out of that county, so he could still have been born in Wiltshire.

Just thinking. Is there no certificate I can source to prove Martha Ranger's maiden name. It is before the BDM index. I could get George Ranger's death certificate but that was in Australia and the chance of it having his mother's name is pretty remote. Would Edward Ranger's death certificate have his spouse's name??

Ann you have given me Edward and Martha's children.
Francis born 1731 is Edward's father.

Edward's wife Martha, is, as I said reported to be a "Target" but I can find no source to prove that. That leave me with the question of why Martha Mitchel married William Target on 25 Oct 1819, having given birth to George Ranger about 10 Oct 1819 and the Martha as Martha Target proceeded to have a child to William Target in 1826.

I am beginning to believe my own intuition that them what has Martha Target as wife of Edward Ranger have the wrong Martha. Either that or she was traipsing between Wiltshire and Surrey.

I did think about William Target dying but he and his Martha were still having little Target's in 1820, and he wasn't baptised until 1826.

Andrew, your idea of that being George is worth thinking about. He was christened in Wiltshire in 1819 and there is no reason to believe he was not born in Hindon. However I would not discount his telling an untruth about where he was born for one reason or another.

I am waiting to discover if there is any possibility of sourcing his trial documentation from 1847, which is six years after the census. That took place in the New Sarum Assizes which is Wiltshire, so he was still in that area.
